In memory of

李樹佐先生 Mr. Donald Lee

September 1, 1931 -  March 11, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Lee who died peacefully at Toronto Western Hospital on March 11, 2021.
Born in Taishan, Guangdong Province, China (1931), he immigrated to Canada in 1949. He joined his father, Fay Lee, to work at the family run business, The Modern Café, in Gananoque. A few years later, he was joined by his wife, Mary, and son, John. The family grew with the births of Gary, William, and Kenny.
The Modern Café, established in 1935, was not only a landmark on the main street for years, but a place of great memories. Donald spent endless hours in the kitchen preparing meals for regular local customers and visitors during the busy tourist season. He took pride in his cooking and looked forward to spending time at home with his family. After his father retired, Donald and his sister, Bonnie, managed the deeply cherished family business.
Donald retired in 1999 and spent the first few years supporting the new owners of The Modern and enjoying retired life in Gananoque. A few years later, he moved to Toronto to be closer to his family. He dedicated his time to taking care of his grandchildren and helping his wife grow vegetable in the garden. He also enjoyed watching sports on TV, playing cards, and loved family gatherings.
Donald is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Lee, four children and nine grandchildren; John (Amy Tan) and children Alison, Jennifer and Becky; Gary (Su Ping Ma) and children Cindy and Simon; William (Mei Yao Cao) and children Katie and Daniel; Kenny (Linda Lee) and children Amanda and Breanna. His children and grandchildren were a source of endless pride and joy.
Donald will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered forever.
