Moyra Veronica Tooke (Otterson), 93, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024, surrounded by her family.
Moyra was born in Liverpool in 1930; was shipped off to the North of Ireland during the Second World War; lived to London, England as a young woman; and finally emigrated to Canada, meeting her future husband Gerald on the way over. Moyra pursued a career in education, teaching elementary school in Toronto, and later writing and developing educational books and tools for students and teachers.
Moyra started her own publishing company and spoke at many national and international conferences on education, with a focus on indigenous culture. Among her other notable achievements are serving on the board of directors for the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, and also on a Royal High Commission in Ottawa. Moyra’s hobbies included mystery novels and cryptic crossword puzzles.
Moyra is predeceased by her parents John and Ethel Otterson, sister Norah ‘Dinky’, brother John ‘Desi’, and sister Maureen. She is survived by her children Simon (Mai), Gillian (George), and Martin, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.
There are no plans for a service. Cremation is taking place, and internment will be at York Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, if you can, go hug your mum.
