In memory of

Moyra Veronica Tooke

August 13, 1930 -  February 15, 2024

Moyra Veronica Tooke (Otterson), 93, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Moyra was born in Liverpool in 1930; was shipped off to the North of Ireland during the Second World War; lived to London, England as a young woman; and finally emigrated to Canada, meeting her future husband Gerald on the way over. Moyra pursued a career in education, teaching elementary school in Toronto, and later writing and developing educational books and tools for students and teachers.

Moyra started her own publishing company and spoke at many national and international conferences on education, with a focus on indigenous culture. Among her other notable achievements are serving on the board of directors for the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, and also on a Royal High Commission in Ottawa. Moyra’s hobbies included mystery novels and cryptic crossword puzzles.

Moyra is predeceased by her parents John and Ethel Otterson, sister Norah ‘Dinky’, brother John ‘Desi’, and sister Maureen. She is survived by her children Simon (Mai), Gillian (George), and Martin, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.

There are no plans for a service. Cremation is taking place, and internment will be at York Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, if you can, go hug your mum.

I wish we had been able to see more of Aunt Moyra. I read her obituary and it sounds like she had a fascinating life and was closely connected to her immediate family. RIP Auntie Moyra x

The Kilgour Clan were glad to have the opportunity to meet up with her again when we all were in Canada for holiday. Chuckle! Gillian said to me "Mum can be tiring so 20 minutes stay will be enough for her" No problem I said. At 11.35 she said to all of us would you like a drink? We left approx two hours later after opening two bottles of wine. It was great seeing her again. Good bye Aunt Moyra. Rest in peace. XXX❤️
