In memory of

Monica Souza-Marques

April 9, 1942 -  November 2, 2021

Monica passed away peacefully following her battle with cancer on November 2nd, 2021, at the young age of 79.

Caring wife of late Lynn Souza-Marques; married for 51 years, dear Mother of Linda (Bosco) and Savia, fun-loving Nana of Whitney & Ashton (Chantel), and her supportive grand-doggie, Gia.

Monica came from a very large family of 11 siblings. Predeceased by William, Fr. Bruno, Valley, Priscilla, Tony, Johnny, Maura & Luke and currently survived by Victor and Eloy.

A special thank you to her family doctor and to the many doctors & nurses who cared for her at Credit Valley Hospital along with the Palliative home care team. Thanks also to the wonderful nurses and PSWs who attended to her needs throughout.

In her Executive Secretary career, Monica worked for a petroleum company, airlines, and later for the Canadian government. She was very efficient and highly respected in her field! Monica used her amazing shorthand and typing skills – and then easily transitioned to new technologies of email and her beloved iPad. Her attention to detail, being super organized and informed of matters, helped her stay in tune with current affairs. She was our MTV (Monica news) station which included weather, traffic, gas prices, and current events.

In her younger days, Monica helped organize a variety of events and socials. Over the last few years, Monica assisted with events held by the G.O.A. and enjoyed meeting people and was well known at her condo retirement community.

Monica loved music (her favourite singer was Connie Francis). Her radio was always on really loud throughout the day. As for singing...She even belted out 'Oh Carol' (by Neil Sedaka) on a tour bus in Costa Rica! Monica was known for her love of dancing. She'd be among the first one to say “C'mon baby! Let's do The Twist!” Solo or partnered, she was ready to kick up her heels on any floor space! This gave her great joy and was part of her exercise.

Monica would always dress with elegant flair and ensured all was well matched. Lipstick was her key makeup item, which helped emphasize her unique smile. She was energetic, independent, and vibrant. Those who needed her help, she was there for and could be considered a trusted confidante. When she was given a task, she was always committed to completing it on time.

She was a world traveller (6 of the 7 continents, with many, many countries visited) and her suitcase was always packed, ready to go!

Monica, may you finally find peace from all the pain and suffering you have endured.

Mum, we your family, are appreciative for all you have done for us throughout our lives. We are grateful for providing us with all the details and instructions for your final journey.

Monica's passing leaves a big void in a lot of people's lives. Her cheerful smile and laughter were something we will always remember and try to emulate. She had a big heart and was always willing to talk or offer a listening ear. Monica, rest in peace. We will always love you and remember you and your stories.

She was a Goan at heart and in spirit. Loved her vibrancy and her undying love for the konkani language. She never failed to support me with positivity and words of encouragement. She was unique in more ways than one.

I deeply regret that she isn't here to listen to Radio Mango's Comeback inaugural show on Saturday!

You will be sorely missed, my namesake friend.

May her soul rest in peace and went straight to the place that THE ALMIGHTY FATHER kept for her on All Souls Day. Monica and myself had a lot of laughs together. .

A true Goan at heart and will be truly missed amongst her kindness , cheerful smile and willingness to help whenever she got a chance. She helped the G.O.A. organize all the executive meetings at the retirement home and for that and all that she has done for the community, we will forever be grateful. She is now in a much better place and may her soul rest in peace !!
