In memory of

Mircea Dumitriu

October 5, 1932 -  December 22, 2019

It is with great sorrow that we announce that Dr. Mircea Dumitriu has passed away in his 87th year in Toronto, Canada.

Mircea was a significant personality in the domain of geology and made research and teaching his lifelong passions. He was a devoted researcher and professor in geological institutes and faculties in his native Romania and in Canada, where his work and courses were highly appreciated.

He began his career as a Principal Research Investigator at the Geological and Geophysical Institute of Romania focusing on mineral exploration, sedimentology, and geomathematics. In 1977, he immigrated with his wife and son to Canada where he continued his career at the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Petro-Canada (Calgary), the Ministry of Environment (Ottawa), and the University of Toronto’s Department of Geology. He continued to be active until the end as a research associate at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute.

We grieve being separated from Mircea, a loved and respected family member and colleague, but we find consolation at the thought that he went to be with his beloved wife and son who passed away previously.

Rest in peace, Mircea…

I have such fond memories of Mircea from my time as an MSc student. Sharing his time and knowledge to help me and all the students with their projects and analyses. He told amazing stories from his life, showed genuine interest in our lives and always had a good joke up his sleeve. My sincere condolences.

Mircea was an important part of my graduate studies experience, as well as life after working in the Grynpas-lab. His emails with scientific facts or characteristic humour were always appreciated, as were his supportive words. Best wishes to Mircea's spirit, which may be trying to figure out the physics of this universe from a different perspective, and my condolences to his family.

Mircea will be remembered as highly intelligent man possessing a dry sense of humour leading to many amusing and interesting conversations. Even after he had retired as an active member of the lab, he would frequently drop by to catch up and ensure that we were abreast of current world news and engage in lively discussions. You will certainly be missed by all who had the opportunity to know you. My sincere condolences.
