Michail (Mike) Nitsopoulos
September 10th, 1929 - October 30th, 2024
On Wednesday, October 30th, 2024, Michail peacefully passed away in his home at the spectacular age of 95. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Triada with whom he was married for 66 years. His infant son, Gelche, also predeceased him. He was blessed with five more children: May, Christine, Jim (Mary), Evangeline (late Rain), and Sophie (Tom). He was also the proud Dedo to nine grandchildren: Candice (Jonny), Stephanie, Christopher, Michelle, Jordan, Deanna (Josh), Michael, Madison (Drae), and Jenna. He adored his mother Niki (Chris), and often spoke of her and his siblings, their spouses, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Mike was a fighter. After tragically losing his firstborn son, he never gave up trying to support his family and help them to the best of his abilities. He was proud to say, "I work for my kids". Decades later, enduring the loss of his beloved wife, ten years his junior, he had to learn new habits and find ways to live without the woman with whom he had built a life. Up until the stroke he suffered on Canada Day, he continued to live independently in his home where he and his family were the first and only occupants. While lonely at times, he loved the freedom it offered him. He also loved driving. He was always well-prepared for his "seniors" ministry tests. He would be thrilled each time he passed with flying colours, leaving the examining centre with glee as he bid farewell to the friends he would inevitably meet while in the waiting area. He was an extrovert and was inspired by engaging and provocative conversations. He continued his daily coffee outings with friends and family where he would talk about a variety of topics, including, but not limited to politics, cultural backstories, and money. Even while recovering in hospital, he was eager to return to the McDonald's community where he appreciated the kind staff and patrons who welcomed him with warmth and friendliness. His other sources of joy were dancing, his companion birds, card games, cars, and saving a dollar or two.
A public celebration of his life will be held at Pine Hills Cemetery and Funeral Centre, 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4th. A funeral service and interment will follow at Pine Hills Cemetery on Tuesday, November 5th, at 1:00 p.m.
