Gospel reading, Homily and Celebration of Michael’s Life
by Fr. Ed at Blessed Trinity Church on Feb 2, 2024
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 14: 1-6.
Jesus said to His Disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God and trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house. If there were not, I should have told you so. I am going to prepare a place for you. And after I have gone and prepared a place for you, I shall return to take you with me, so that where I am you may be too. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; so how can we know the way?” Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Homily and Celebration of Michael’s Life
As Christians, we know that this earthly life is not the final story.
We come together as believers to celebrate Michael’s life and to remind ourselves of the truths of faith, that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came among us, worked with human hands, loved with a human heart, cried with human tears, took on all things human in order to ransom and save us from darkness and from sin.
In His death, three days later, in fulfillment of all the ancient prophecies, He rose from the dead, destroying forever the kingdom of sin and death, which is why when one of His through baptism dies, like Michael, Jesus comes and welcomes us as the good shepherd into eternal life.
We, the children of God. We the members of Christ’s body, we get to share in that work. We get to participate in the work of our redeemer, in bringing Michael into paradise.
This means as baptized Christians, we pray for our beloved Michael. We remember Michael born in Hong Kong in April, 1961. At the age of 17, he immigrated to Canada with his parents, finishing high school and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from York University. His two older sisters were already living in Canada. Michael started his career as a salesperson in a car dealership and eventually opened a computer IT shop. He always had a very good memory, even though he suffered from Parkinson disease for many years. Michael had a very good temper. His wife Phoebe never made him mad. He was also very clean and tidy. Michael was a good planner, never late for an appointment, and always appeared with a professional look. Whenever Michael had spare time, he liked to travel. Michael always created a good atmosphere when gathering with family and friends. Throughout his life, he was an audiophile and gave lots of good advice to people purchasing hi-fi sound systems since he was a little child.
Today, we hold all our memories of Michael close in our hearts, the memory of a beloved husband, the memory of a beloved brother, a loving uncle, church friend, and we pray that God has given eternal rest to Michael, that he open wide the gates of paradise, saying come my dear son, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. May Michael, one of our Lord’s loving children, rest in peace.
