In memory of

Michael Robert Haughian

July 23, 1944 -  December 29, 2024

Bob left this world on December 29 at his Toronto home after a final brief illness. He is survived by his beloved partner, Rick Asals and his former wife, Sheree. He was a devoted father to Andrew (Kimberly) and Maura (Gregg) and the proud grandfather of Madeline, Marcus, Adele and Neil. He also played an active role in the lives of Rick's children– Katharine, Sarah (Patrick) and David (Jennifer) and grandchildren Benjamin, Nolan, Danica, Logan and Cooper.

Born in Perth Ontario in 1944, Bob exhibited a love of learning from an early age. He earned a B.A. in English from the University of Ottawa and an M.A. from Western University, specializing in Chaucer. His illustrious career in education began in Kent County. He was esteemed in Dufferin County as a teacher and a high-school principal. Students from more than one generation were inspired by his creativity, enthusiasm and love of excellence. He was remembered fondly by colleagues and positively impacted many careers in teaching and administration.

Bob was not simply a man of letters. He was also an avid skier and a determined gardener. He renovated heritage houses in Mono Township and Meaford. In his retirement, he continued to develop his life-long passion for theatre, music and travel. He also took great pleasure in entertaining friends and family with wonderful home-cooked meals and interesting stories.

Both a gentleman and a scholar, Bob will be missed by all who knew him. A celebration of his life will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto on Saturday, February 15 between 1-3 pm. Please no flowers. Donations in his memory can be made to the Canadian Neuroendrocine Tumour Society.

Bob was an extraordinary human and he helped me to think deeply about every day choices. We first met when I was a student at Orangeville District Secondary School and he got to know me through my roles on student council and in the student plays. Bob became my mentor at Princess Margaret as we had long chats about teaching when I was first starting my teaching career. He always had a way of pushing my thinking to see other perspectives, and to embrace the moral gray of decision-making. I'm sure he touched many lives, but I want you to know that you left an impact on me. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Bob, thank you, for a few well-chosen words in a high school hallway. You were the one who reminded me, during a time long ago when I was feeling particularly scattered, that I had a clear vision of my career path. Not just career, actually, but life. It took me some time and even more courage to step onto that path, to own it, and I've often felt deeply grateful to you for your kind words. Happy to hear that your life has been a good one. Trudy

Andrew and Maura
So sorry to read of your dad's passing. I always enjoy our chats and especially the parent to teacher discussions. He was a very interesting and talented individual with a great sense of humour. My sincere condolences.

Bob Haughian was always the smartest person in the room, but made others' contributions seem valuable. He was a talented teacher of English and Drama, a gifted administrator, and readily empathized with his staff and students. At Centre Dufferin District High School, he once said that our job was to make the learning and overall high school experiences for the Basic and General level students the best that they could be. Why? He said the Advanced level students would likely be leaving town after graduation, but many or most of the Basic and General level students would be staying. They needed to remember that high school was one of the best times of their lives -- especially when they were paying their municipal taxes. Bob was a great colleague, and a good friend to my wife, Trish, and me. He will be missed.
