Michael Huerta, 53, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, passed away from pneumonia in early March 2026. Born on April 22, 1972, in Toronto, Michael spent much of his childhood and up to early adulthood in A Coruña, Galicia, Spain, where he developed a deep love for the ocean. He often shared fond memories of riding his bicycle to the Atlantic coast after school to swim with friends -- moments that brought him great joy and a lifelong sense of peace.
Michael was the second eldest of three brothers. Following his parents’ separation in 1979, he remained in Spain with his father, Luis Huerta Sr., and his older brother, Luis Huerta Jr., while his mother, Mary Huerta, and younger brother, David Huerta, returned to Toronto. This period was difficult for the family, and Michael deeply felt the absence of his close bond with his mother.
In November 1994, Michael and his older brother, Luis, returned to Toronto in search of new opportunities and were reunited with their mother and youngest brother. There, Michael built a life grounded in kindness, resilience, and generosity. He learned English, formed lasting friendships, and became known for his willingness to help anyone in need. Michael had a big heart and gave selflessly to others. He was a devoted son who cared deeply for his mother, especially as her health declined and she developed dementia. He went above and beyond to support her, showing unwavering love and dedication through challenging times.
Michael never married and had no nieces or nephews, but his life was rich with meaningful relationships and acts of kindness that touched many. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, compassion, and enduring love for his family.
He is reunited in peace with his father, Luis Huerta Sr., and his older brother, Luis Huerta Jr. He leaves behind his mother, Mary Huerta, younger brother, David Huerta, and sister-in-law, Wynne Huerta. He is also survived by the family of his late uncle, Fernando Huerta Sr., in Canada and the United States, and his uncle, Jesús Huerta, in Spain, along with extended relatives and friends who will miss him deeply.
A public visitation will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, and a private family witnessing will follow. A private family inurnment ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael’s memory to Progress Place (https://www.progressplace.org/donate) and/or St. Michael’s Hospital (https://stmichaelsfoundation.com/).
Michael will be remembered as a kind and caring soul. Those who knew him can take comfort in knowing he is resting peacefully -- perhaps once again floating on calm waters and looking up at the sky.
