In memory of

Peter Anthony McLoughlin

January 30, 1937 -  December 18, 2023

It is with deep sadness that the McLoughlin family announces the passing of Peter McLoughlin, on the morning of December 18th. He is survived by his wife Ann, of 63 years; daughter Carol-Anne (Paul), with granddaughter Madeline; son Sean (Kleis) with grandsons James and Daniel; daughter Tara with grandson Jack; and many nephews and nieces in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Peter was born in Eldoret, Kenya, Africa, to John James McLoughlin and Eva McLoughlin (nee Burnett). He attended the Prince of Wales boarding school in Nairobi and, upon graduation, accompanied his mother on her return to Britain. He apprenticed with an architectural firm in London, England, where he met his future wife Ann. Soon after, he made the decision to emigrate to Toronto, Canada, where Ann joined him, and they were married on December 31, 1960.

Peter had a passion for architectural design, and thus maintained a long career in architectural design and construction. Upon his arrival in Canada, he worked with Fisher, Tedman, Fisher & Glaister, and subsequently started his own design firm, McLoughlin Designs. He took on large commercial projects but was also generous in sharing his skills to help friends and family who were building or improving their homes, cottages, or businesses. He had a long association with the Peel District School Board, Maintenance Services, assembling a digital archive of their buildings, with a view to preserving original architectural documents and supporting the ongoing maintenance and safety of their schools. An enthusiastic proponent of the work of his wife and partner Ann, Peter designed and created the McLoughlin School, which was the preschool to some generations of young children.

Peter had a great love for the north country and had many dear friends there. He was especially proud of the family cottages he built over the years, first on Doe Lake and later near Magnetawan, Ontario. Although well established as a proud new Canadian, he always maintained memories of his earlier days, speaking in Swahili with anybody he met who shared this language, and living by values established early in his childhood with his Scottish and Irish parents. Peter was a generous, kind, and empathetic man, always willing to lend a hand or help anyone in need, and always looking for and finding the best in people. His family and friends can attest that he never lost his sense of humour or charm.

The family will hold a private gathering in late January, to celebrate his life.

Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
