In memory of

May Shiu Tam

December 29, 1931 -  February 13, 2021

Born in the village of KaiPing in the province of GuangDong, China our beloved mother grew up in a loving and simple family environment despite formidable challenges all around, not to mention having to endure the brutal Japanese invasion of China during which the family nomadically moved among her home village, the cities of Macau and Hong Kong.

Through matchmakers in her hometown village, she married our dad around the year of 1949 and soon migrated to Hong Kong. A decade later they had their hands full, with six rambunctious sons who grew up fast. While she would often confess she did not possess much knowledge, our mother did manage to vastly improve her confidence and expertise through learning on her own. It is fair to say she was not well educated but ironically she became highly intelligent, complete with a gregarious personality, a generous heart and a good sense of humour adored by family, siblings, friends and Mahjong buddies. She taught us well, passing on inspiring values, instilling honesty, integrity, pride, independence and above all the pursuit of higher education for all of us.

Another decade later thanks to her sister (our Aunt Sue) and her husband Uncle Fred Hum, our family immigrated to Toronto in 1970 to start a new and rather prosperous chapter of our lives. This family grew from two initially to 45 immediate members (with 15 fabulous grandchildren and 11 gorgeous great grandchildren) today, a rather remarkable accomplishment considering a humble beginning with next to nothing but with sheer determination to do well for themselves and for the family, they overcame financial and health challenges to nurture and protect the family through thrift and wisdom.

It is excruciating to let go but recognizing mortality while taking into account her many extraordinary accomplishments, we are deeply appreciative and proud of our beloved mother. She will be with our beloved father and brothers Benny and Stephen in a world free of pain and suffering. May you rest in peace mom.

Your loving children Tony, Albert, Kenny and Danny.
