In memory of

Mavis May

June 18, 1925 -  December 24, 2021

On Friday December 24, 2021, Olive (Mavis) May, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 96. Survived by her daughter Vivien, son-in-law Steven, grandchildren Alison, Kristen, and stepson Paul, she will be dearly missed.
Mavis was born in 1925 in Lancashire, England to William and Emily.
She and her late husband Peter emigrated from post WWII England to Canada in the 1950’s to begin a new life in Scarborough, Ontario. A teacher with the Toronto District School Board, it was during this 29-year tenure she was instrumental in helping to educate hundreds of primary school children.
Known for her waist-long braided ponytail, she traveled the world with Peter and after he passed, with her new life partner the late Alfred Newton. Mavis enjoyed every opportunity to soak up the sun at the cottage and in Florida, downhill ski or to
enjoy ballroom and line dancing. With an insatiable appetite for the written word she was never without a book or her daily newspaper, a stimulating conversationalist with insight and quick wit.
Many thanks to all the caregivers who supported Mavis during her stay at Bendale Acres. Donations to Bendale Acres Long Term Care Home, the Candadian Alzheimer's Society or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. A private interment will be held on January 8, 2022 at Pine Hills Cemetery and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

I am so very happy that my father met Mavis shortly after they both lost their spouses. My late father and I were better people for having Mavis in our lives. They were the ideal companions and she will be missed. We had many spirited discussions when I was younger and she never hesitated to call me on my stuff and for that I am deeply grateful. I sincerely hope she has transitioned to a new beginning and I wish all the best forever more. All my love, Paul

I met Mavis several years ago and always enjoyed her company. She was a strong, educated woman who had a very curious mind and was always learning. She was also very interested in people and enjoyed her life. She will be missed by all those who knew her and loved her.

Mavis was a client and friend of mine for many years. It was my pleasure to meet her several years ago simply by chance and to serve her need of a tax preparer. She was indeed, a witty person, very pleasant and as sharp as can be. We'll all miss her. Rest in peace, Mavis.
