In memory of

Philip Oliver Maude

November 22, 1937 -  February 24, 2018

Philip Oliver Maude
Born November 22, 1937 in Peace River, Alberta - Died February 24, 2018 in Toronto, Ontario

Phil, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, died peacefully, with family around him, on Saturday, 24 February, of pneumonia, after some months of declining health. Son of the late Oliver Maude and Eva Fiddament, he leaves behind Mary McDougall Maude, his beloved friend, wife, and constant companion since 1959, who is distraught and resentful that he left her so soon. He will be greatly missed by his treasured “niecelets” Amy McDougall and Claire McDougall, by sisters-in-law Jean McDougall and Karen Laurence, and honorary relatives Susan Longmire and Henri Fiks. He also leaves to mourn his family in Blenheim, Ontario: sister Shirley McGuigan; niece Dianne McGuigan, her children, Shane Houston (Nikki), Nicole Ostropolec (Mike), and Danielle Houston; and many many wonderful friends. He enjoyed his days and friends at high school in Ridgetown so much that he managed to stretch them well beyond the requisite 5 years.

Phil worked in the financial sector as a bond trader / salesman for A.E. Ames and Dominion Securities, among others, before taking an early retirement to enjoy fully the better things in life. He was a man of many interests: he loved listening to music, especially jazz, and brought joy to himself and delighted others singing and playing the piano; he loved reading and talking of history and ideas, over a convivial latte with friends, and punning, whether he had an appreciative audience or not; he loved being outdoors, whether walking the streets and ravines of Toronto, or cultivating gorgeous planters and gardens full of riotous colour; and he loved cooking and sharing good food and wine with loved ones. His presence at the table will be sadly missed by everyone who has had the good fortune to enjoy it.

We would like to thank Dr. Natalie Morson and Dr. Jeremy Kobulnik for their care recently and over the last few years, and the staff of Mount Sinai Hospital’s emergency room and ICU for their help and their kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Victoria College Annual Fund (www.vicu.utoronto.ca), the Dictionary of Canadian Biography (www.biographi.ca), Sinai Health Foundation (supportsinai.ca), or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
A private cremation has been held and a Memorial Gathering on Saturday, April 14th from 3-5 pm with speeches around 4 pm. For online condolences and information on the timing of the memorial gathering, please visit www.etouch.ca.

Mary,

Here I am in Ottawa, reading the G&M, and feeling so sad for you.

I will ask for information on the timing of the memorial gathering, hoping that I can travel to Toronto ...

This is for Mary--such fond memories of my business dealings with Phil and the fun social gatherings with you both and the guys from New York.
Our ranks have really thinned out over the past few years .
The notice of a memorial is not posted yet but please let me know--my
e-mail is shown above....
Sincerely,
Jerry Aziz.

I'm just as sorry as I can be about this news. I remember Phil as a warmhearted, amusing and delightful person, even when likely to lose at boule. My condolences to Mary and all the family.

Phil was so talented and so likeable. The world is a darker place without him.
