In memory of

Mary Cameron (nee O’Neill)

May 1, 1932 -  January 9, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce Mary’s passing at age 89, on January 9, 2022.

Mary fought a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on May 1,1932 in Motherwell, Scotland, the daughter of John and Annie O’Neill. Mary will be greatly missed by her devoted and loving husband Jack, her cherished children Cathy Smith, Christine Dell’Aquila, John Cameron and David Cameron. She will be fondly remembered by her sons-in-law Dave Smith and Mike Dell’Aquila. Mary was an adoring grandmother to Emma, Andrew, Catherine and Sophia. As the second oldest of nine children, Mary was always part of a large and loving family. She is predeceased by her sister Cathy, and her brothers Jim and David. She is lovingly remembered by her sisters Pat, Peggy, Anne, and her brothers John and Gerald.

Mary’s early years were shaped by the Great Depression and Second World War. Their family had little but banded together to care for each other and anyone in need of help. Mary and her oldest sister left school early at the age of fourteen to help care for their younger siblings. She later followed in the footsteps of her oldest sister Cathy Bill and boarded the Ocean Liner M.V. Corinaldo to Canada in 1956 to seek a life that promised adventure and opportunities. Mary embraced all Canada had to offer. She started work at the Dominion Stores and soon was promoted to head cashier. Mary met her loving husband Jack soon after and started her beautiful family. Mary never forgot her family in Scotland and her sister Peggy in the United States. Many of her happiest moments were spent recounting stories of the old days and having a laugh with her sisters. Mary was a kind and generous soul. She liked to quote the poet Robbie Burns and never missed the opportunity for a dance with Jack and a “wee sing song”.

Thank you to all the caregivers that have supported Mary over the years and to her loving sister Anne who visited Mary every week.

A Memorial Visitation will take place on Saturday, September 24, 2022 from 1 pm - 2 pm At Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, followed by a Memorial Service at 2 pm. A link to livestream the Memorial Service will become available at the top of this page at approximately 1:45 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

Please visit the "Photos" and "Media" tabs at the top right side of Mary's Memorial page to photos of Mary throughout the years and a video tribute.

Mary and Jack made an indelible mark upon my life. Their family and ours were incredibly close. As I child I remember piling into Jack's little Volkswagon Beetle and heading to Wasaga Beach. What wonderful memories I have of family picnics, Christmas dinners and gatherings. I was delighted to be asked to a flower girl at their wedding and loved each one of their children as they were added to the family. Mary was very creative. She made fabulous cakes for my baby showers and birthday parties for my children. Beautiful designs. If the cakes were not so delicious we would have hesitated to cut into them. Mary had such a spirit, always speaking her mind but with a compassion for others that she has passed on to each of her children. I will miss you and always cherish the fact that you were in my life.

Sunday my sister Mary passed away. It has made me feel so sad. Growing up she was my big sister and took great care of me and my brothers and sisters. We have so many happy memories of her when we were small, she was a great big sister. I could write a book about Mary. I will never forget you Mary, I love you very much. Enjoy being with the family up there. Till we meet again, I know we are going to miss you Mary. Anne and Roy.
