It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Marilyn Joan Porter White. She passed on January 19, 2024, surrounded by her daughters.

Marilyn is survived by her daughters Lisa, Michelle and Emily, and her four grandchildren, Conrad, Sarah, Kristina and Grace, as well as by many former colleagues, students, friends and neighbours.

Marilyn was born on December 1st, 1932. She moved with her family from Kentucky to Toronto in 1967, with 2 years spent overseas in Finland.

She earned a BA and MA from The University of Minnesota and later began a career as an ESL teacher and college professor. Marilyn later earned another degree, a Master of Education from the University of Toronto in 1986. Marilyn worked at George Brown College for more than 2 decades, where she was a valued and respected professor, colleague and advisor.

Marilyn loved playing bridge and was quite competitive, often travelling to the US for tournaments. She loved animals, cats – Siamese, in particular – volunteering at The Toronto Humane Society and giving regularly to various rescue and environmental groups.

Yard work, upkeeping her home, a good book and “her shows” brought her joy, and being with family.

The family recently gathered together for a small ceremony to say goodbye.
