It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, Maria Kapetaneas, at the age of 93. She slipped away with her family by her side on November 1st, 2024, at Humber River Hospital, Toronto.
She leaves behind her husband of 74 years, John Kapetaneas, and her 3 children Nicholas, Aggeliki (Peter) and Dimitra (John). She will be deeply missed by her 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren: Mike (Angela), Alex (Natalie), Mary (Peter), Sophia (Alberto), Vicki, Antigone, Athena, Jonathan, Angelika, Lia, Mila and Sophia.
Maria was born in Mystras, Greece on 24th October 1931 to Athanasios and Aggeliki (Kakaletris) Harisis. She was the youngest of three siblings; her brothers were Stavros and Petros. She married her husband, John Kapetaneas and together with their three children, they lived in Mystras, Greece until 1963 when they emigrated to Canada.
Maria was humble and had the warmest heart. She cherished time with her family and enjoyed gardening. She took great pride in her cooking and regularly gathered her loved ones for home cooked meals, including her famous dolmadakia.
Farewell dearest mother and cherished grandmother.
Should you wish to make a donation in Maria's name, please consider Humber River Hospital, Toronto, where Maria was cared for as her health declined.
The Ship by Bishop Brent
I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until at length she hangs
like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky
come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!"
"'Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as she was when she left my side
and she is just as able to bear her load
of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone at my side says
"There, she is gone!"
there are other eyes watching her coming,
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout,
"Here she comes!"
And that is dying.
