In memory of

Maria Hadjianastasiou

April 12, 1938 -  May 3, 2025

Maria Hadjianastasiou, lovingly known as “Maroulou” to her friends from Cyprus, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, in Oshawa, Ontario at the age of 87.

Cherished wife to her husband Iordanis, loving mother to her daughter Christina (Costas), and her late son Chrysostomos (Panayiota). She was a proud grandmother to Michael, Maria, Christina (Zaki), Marilena (Konstantinos), and Jordan (Christine), and to her great-granddaughter Lina.

Born in the village of Mitsero, Cyprus, Maria’s life was shaped by resilience, deep faith, and a love for family. She and her husband Iordanis built a life together grounded in care for their children, and the many animals they raised.

She adored her four siblings and often shared stories from her childhood filled with laughter, love, and mischief. In 1975, Maria and her family immigrated to Canada, carrying the spirit of Cyprus with them into a new chapter in Durham, Ontario. Her culture came alive in her cooking, her garden, and her stories.

Maria had a quiet wit and an open heart. Her home was always warm and welcoming, often filled with the scent of something baking. She loved roses, had a remarkable green thumb, and a sense of adventure that took her traveling whenever she could. Above all, she poured her heart into her five grandchildren, helping raise them with love, patience, and joy.

Maria met life’s hardships with grace and gave so much love to those around her. She will be remembered for her kindness, her strength, and the way she made others feel truly cared for.

All who knew and loved Maria are welcome to attend and honour her life."

Donations in memory of Maria can be made to the church either by cheque, in person or e-transfer. Cheques can be made payable to: Hellenic Orthodox Church of Oshawa & District, and e-transfers can be sent to: goevangelismos@yahoo.ca

Dear Christina, my deepest condolences. I recall your Mom being a very happy and smiley person. But, what I recall the most is your love and care for her. You were her Joy and Comfort.

Goodbye to our beloved Aunt Maria, whose kindness, warmth, and gentle humor touched everyone lucky enough to know her. We take comfort in knowing she is now reunited in heaven with her dear son, her sister, her brother, and her loving parents, a family whose love and joy were always shared so freely with everyone around them.
Their spirits live on in the happiness they gave, the memories they left behind, and the love that still surrounds us. Rest in peace, Aunt Maria. You will always be in our hearts.

I’ll always remember when she came to London with my mum, just to be by her side during her operation. It meant so much to all of us. We’ll forever be grateful for the love and care she showed our mother, Alexandra, during that time.

Rest peacefully — I have no doubt Mum will be so happy to see you again in Heaven.

I have so many beautiful memories with my Thea Maria. Every time we visited, she made sure the table was full of food and that we felt completely at home. Her warmth and generosity were unmatched. I’ll never forget the time I spent with her during my first trip to Cyprus; those memories will stay with me forever. We love you so much, Thea. Thank you for everything!
