In memory of

Maria Chun Oi Ng - 吳珍愛女士安息

July 14, 1953 -  August 21, 2023

Maria (Chun Oi) Ng, 70 years, of Toronto, Ontario, passed away unexpectedly in her home on August 21st, 2023 after suffering a medical emergency. Her family is deeply saddened by her sudden death.
Maria was born on July 14th, 1953 to Yue Heung Ng and Moon Tong Ng in Sun Wui, China. Maria moved to Hong Kong at a young age with her family where she was a top student in primary school. During this time, Maria’s father and her 3 eldest brothers made the challenging move to North Bay, Ontario in hopes of providing a better life for their family.
In 1967, Maria immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, along with her mother and 3 younger siblings to make their family complete again. Finally, all 5 brothers and 2 sisters were living happily together with their parents under one roof at 124 Bertmount Avenue. The Bertmount house and Maria became the hub for many Ng family gatherings and provided many wonderful memories. The ever generous Maria loved to indulge her family with gifts and meals especially her many nieces and nephews and eventually her grandnieces and grandnephews as well.

Maria enrolled in grade 9 at Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute but needed to leave shortly afterwards due to health issues. Once her health improved and with the love and encouragement of her family and especially her mother, Maria went on to complete her high school diploma at the City Adult Learning Centre.
After graduating, Maria started her first job with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) as a librarian. After over 30 years, as a successful TDSB librarian, she gratefully and happily retired. In her retirement, Maria spent most of her time volunteering with the Toronto Chinese Alliance Church (TCAC) doing outreach work, church programs, and helping church members in need of assistance. Maria also volunteered at Progress Place which is a mental health community centre dedicated to improving the lives of people living with mental illness.

As a deeply religious person, Maria’s devotion to God first began while attending the Chinese Gospel Church in Chinatown. She was baptized at the Grant African Methodist Episcopal Church but soon after joined TCAC through their welcoming outreach program. Eventually TCAC became Maria’s very supportive “second home” where she worshiped and served the Lord as a devout Christian with her brothers and sisters in Christ for over 40 years.

Maria cared deeply for the people around her. She was very kind and thoughtful. She made an impact on many lives. She will be forever missed.

Maria was predeceased by her father, Yue Heung Ng, mother, Moon Tong Ng, older brother Ying Gee Ng and younger brother Ying Wah Ng. She is survived by her brothers Ying Nam Ng (Mei Fong), Ying Foon Ng (Lena), Simon Ng (Sannie), and sister Jenny Henry (Tom).

Visitation and Funeral Service will be held for Maria at Pine Hills Cemetery on Monday, August 28th at 1-3pm.

For those who are unable to attend the Visitation and Funeral Service, may join the family virtually on Zoom on Monday. Please click the link to view the Service.

Maria, I count it my privilege to have known you since the year 2000. You are a faithful and generous friend who loves Jesus. I treasure the time we spent together, be it taking walks while we both worked at Tippett Centre or more recently as we meet from time to time. I miss you dearly.
I hope that your family will be okay as they mourn your passing.

We are devastated to hear of this dear lady's passing. She always greeted us with a smile and a kind word. She touched the lives of everyone in our building. A sweet and gentle soul. We were on the elevator in the past week with her; she was crying softly, and she told me that she had another fall. Her back was very sore as she had suffered with this for a long time. I walked her back to her apartment and helped her put on a s back support so she felt better. She then came back to my floor with me and thanked me. I gave her a lift to the subway some time ago. She was always grateful and so gracious. I can't say enough about her. She told me that her memory was failing and neighbours told me that she would call them by name, even if she only met them once. Dear Maria, may you Rest In Peace. We are all so grateful to you for having been a part of our lives.
