In memory of

Margaret 'Marg' Heilig

June 23, 1934 -  February 20, 2020

Margaret Natalie Whyte Heilig (nee McGiffin)

June 23, 1934 - February 20, 2020, in her 86th year. Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Gramma and friend. Margaret was born in Peterborough to Adelaide and J. Stuart McGiffin. She spent her younger years living in Ottawa, while most of her life was in Toronto. She was one of three sisters: Kathleen Satchell and predeceased by Mary Jones (2019). She was happily married to Robert C. Heilig for 58 years. He predeceased her in 2017. Their proudest accomplishments were raising their four children: John (Kelly), Katherine (Allan), Nancy and Michael. She cherished her time with her grandchildren Robbie, Abbey, Maggie, Amy, Erik, Will, Alex, Jena, Anna and Lauren. She always had a special place in her heart for her sister-in-law, Margie Rogers.

Margaret proudly graduated from Queens, Nursing ’57, and from the University of Toronto with a specialist degree in History. Margaret was all about family, friends and community. She worked at Mackenzie House sharing her love of history, and at The Gage as a Health Educator, instructing and working with the focus on independent living. She spent many years as a Girl Guide leader in Henry Farms, cultivating young women to be independent, caring, and to love the outdoors. Not to mention the countless hours at the kitchen table with her kid’s friends. She always had time for her family and friends. She kept herself busy with her love of skiing, skating, walking, canoe tripping, playdates, travelling and spending countless vacations in Southampton and at the family cabin in Mount Pakenham. Her glass was always ‘half full’. Margaret will be greatly missed by all those who’s lives she touched.

Due to the new government restrictions, the Celebration of Margaret’s life at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Rd, Toronto has been postponed.

I'm very sad with the lose of my friend Margaret! I could talk with her about anything... Her wisdom was immense. I have so many fond memories of Marg. But all the times at a local park having lunch & enjoying nature, are my most cherished! I always felt so honored to say Margaret & Bob too, was my friend!

I always enjoyed the time I spent with Mrs Heilig. She was always warm and made me feel welcome. I certainly enjoyed the day we spent with the polar bears. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you all at this time.

Margaret was a very remarkable woman, always so positive and engaged with everyone and everything around her. While our friendship was relatively short, we both seemed to connect with her. With me, I think it was that we were both Queens and Ottawa Valley girls. We shared many common interests, stories about life in the valley, and about our families. Ian and Margaret shared a love of history, and he learned much about local history from Margaret. He also appreciated her lively spirit and keen interest in the Aria 3R room, where Margaret could do miracles with the many donations deposited there. Her presence there and at Aria will be greatly missed.
Ian and I will dearly miss Margaret and shall remember her always with great affection.
Deepest condolences to all her family.

Margaret was a spirited member of the Aria condo community. Whether participating in exercise class, or welcoming a new resident to the building, her positive energy impacted others. Margaret enthusiastically shared her knowledge of local history as a coffee time speaker and contributor to the condo's newsletter. She also volunteered on the Aria's recycling committee, taking on the never ending task of organizing the condo building's 3R room. Margaret's many friends here will miss her wit, passion and generosity. I personally will miss the twinkle in her eye as we chatted in the elevator. Rest in peace, Margaret.

My life is forever richer because I had the honour of having Margaret Heilig in my life . The day my life changed forever was walking into Girl Guides and meeting Margaret and my forever BFF Katherine . Anyone who was able to spend time with the family and the matriarch that was Margaret is forever enriched. From a quick history lesson ... a nudge here and there to try something new ... to the love of nature ... or a quick glance that perhaps details of a story were a bit thin and perhaps fact checking might be in order ... my heart is fuller because she was in my life ... Goodnight Margaret 💕
