In memory of

Margaret Coombs

June 14, 1929 -  November 30, 2022

Margaret Coombs passed away peacefully on November 30th, 2022, at the age of ninety-three. Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband and the love of her life, Dave, who died just over a year ago. Margaret was a devoted mother to Lawrence and Denise Coombs and adored their spouses, Rosemarie Coombs and Robert Hatton. Margaret was a loving grandmother to Luke, Mackenzie and Alex Coombs, Reilly Cservenyi, and Jasper and Jessie Hatton. She and Dave rarely missed a grandchild’s dance or flute recital, baseball game, or synchro swim meet. And they were the very best babysitters.

Although her babysitting days were behind her, Margaret took great delight in great-grandchildren, Jameson, Maddie, and Rowan. She was also a loving Aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1929. Her father, Arthur Trew, died when she was just ten years old. Her mother, Mary Trew, and her aunt, Jessie Crowe, worked tirelessly to provide a good life for Margaret and her brother Herbert. This included paying for Margaret to attend business college - not an easy feat given their poverty - where she was trained as a secretary and bookkeeper.

Margaret came to Canada in her early 20s and landed a job within a couple of days. She adored Toronto and convinced her family to join her several years later. Margaret and Dave enjoyed a life-long, loving relationship with Margaret’s brother, Herbert, and his wife, Edith.

Margaret was a woman of great intelligence, kindness, and humour. She and Dave created a home overflowing with love and laughter, a warm and welcoming place, where they remained until well into their 80s.

Margaret wasn’t one for self-help books, but she could have written one. Her golden rule was kindness. She was full of gratitude and appreciation for all of the beautiful things in life; and she had the wisdom to focus on those beautiful things.

We are heartbroken that Margaret is no longer with us. And we are full of gratitude for her life and the love she shared so generously with us all.

Margaret was an important influence in my life in my 20s, she and Dave always welcomed me in to the fold as if I was a full fledged member of the family. Later, the same love and generosity was shared with my husband and children. They drove us home from the hospital with our newborn, they were there for it all. I will miss her laugh and our conversations, which always revealed that Margaret was not only kind to a fault, but incredibly intelligent and savvy. We will miss you Margaret.

With love,

Chris
