In memory of

Margaret Almon Evans

September 3, 1924 -  November 22, 2023

Margaret Almon EVANS (nee Fletcher) passed away peacefully at North York General Hospital on November 22, 2023, in her 100th year. She was born in Toronto to Dr. A. Almon and Helen Fletcher, and grew up with three sisters: Edith Watson, her twin Laura Martin, and Joan Harrison. She attended Bishop Strachan School, and Trinity College at U of T, graduating with a BSc and MSc. She married John Evans in 1947, and raised her three beloved children, David (Keri), Arthur (Stephanie), and Anne.

Margaret worked for several years as a biochemist at the Connaught Medical Research Laboratories. She also had many and varied interests. She loved her many summers at Go Home Bay, both as a child at the Fletcher family cottage, and later at her own family cottage. She enjoyed canoeing and sailing, ice hockey, horseback riding, figure skating and tennis. She was a painter, a birder, loved opera and doing puzzles. As a senior she returned to university to study philosophy; and she lived vicariously through her family’s many travels.

Her son David passed away in 2018. In addition to her two surviving children, Margaret leaves behind five grandchildren: Raynor (Gregory), Fletcher (Kelly), Caitlin (Dustin), Jamie, and Alex (Erin); and six great grandchildren: Connor, Andrew, Charlotte, Michaela, Abigail, and Nicholas; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Amica Bayview Village for all the support she received, especially in the past year as her health declined.

At Margaret’s request, there will be no funeral; she will be interred at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Freeman Centre for the Advancement of Palliative Care at NYGH, or to a charity of your choice.

I was very sorry to hear that your mum died. I did not know her well but I have fond memories of her at Christmas events with Arthur and Stephanie. My memories of her were of a bright, determined, no nonsense funny woman. She will be missed by her children and grandchildren. I am sorry for your loss.
