In memory of

Arnold Chan, MP

June 10, 1967 -  September 14, 2017

Arnold Chan passed away at his home on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the age of 50 after a courageous battle against Nasopharyngeal cancer. Son of Sandra and Anthony Chan, he was the beloved husband of Jean Yip, and loving father to Nathaniel, Ethan and Theodore Chan. He is remembered by his brother Kevin and his wife Rosemary and their son Maximilian; as well as by Jean’s family, mother Grace Yip, John (Catherine) and Bruce Yip (Kat) and their families. He will also be deeply missed by his members of his staff, colleagues, and his many friends.

Arnold grew up in Scarborough-Agincourt and attended both Henry Kelsey, and Sir Ernest MacMillan Senior Public Schools, and later Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute. He studied at both the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia and has earned both a Law degree and two Masters degrees in Political Science and Urban Planning. Before running for office, Arnold worked in both the public and private sectors as a lawyer, political aide and a senior corporate manager. Arnold was also active in the community as the co-chair of his children’s school council, and as a Scout Leader. First elected in 2014, and re-elected 2015, Arnold proudly served and represented the residents of Scarborough-Agincourt in the House of Commons right up until his passing. As a Member of Parliament and Deputy Government House Leader, he was deeply passionate about instilling and strengthening our Canadian values be it democracy, civility, less canned speeches in the House of Commons, or the simple thank you to fellow Canadians. Civic engagement, mentoring youth, and championing Scarborough projects were important to Arnold. He worked tirelessly for his riding and the Liberal party.

Two visitations at York Cemetery chapel (160 Beecroft Road) will take place on Thursday Sept 21st from 5-9pm, and on Friday Sept 22nd from 5-9pm. A Celebration of Arnold’s life and legacy will follow on Saturday Sept 23rd for 11am at Bloor St. United Church (300 Bloor St. West). Funeral details and signing of the guestbook and sharing your memories of Arnold can all be accessed at https://mountpleasantgroup.permavita.com/site/MPArnoldGChan.html In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Arnold's memory at either Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation ( Nasopharyngeal cancer research fund) http://www.thepmcf.ca/Ways-to-Give or the Tammy Latner Centre for Palliative Care. http://www.tlcpc.org/

The family is deeply grateful for the warm outpouring of words and support from across Canada. Thank you.

I am so sorry to hear about Arnold's death. He was a great guy, who was a true inspiration to me. What struck me about Arnold was his honesty, integrity and intelligence. He was like a dog with a bone when it came to discussing politics and anything else which challenged him intellectually. He was truly a good guy and I will miss him.

Jean, Nathaniel, Ethan and Theodore - I was greatly saddened to hear of Arnold's untimely passing. Indeed, he left us too soon. He was a generous person who devoted so much of his intellect and industry to the greater good. I will miss him dearly as I know you will too.

I stand with you in this time of loss.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Arnold's passing. I found him to be an extremely intelligent, humorous and talented man and I liked having our conversations at the church. My condolences and prayers to my friend, Jean and Nate, Ethan and Theo. Too young, so sad.
