It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lykourgos Panoussis, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 2, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born on February 23, 1947, in the small village of Vlacherna, Greece, Lykourgos’s life was a remarkable story of strength, perseverance, and hard work. From a very young age, life required him to become independent. At approximately 12 years old, he left home and lived on his own in Athens, learning at an age when most were still children how to make his own way in the world.
He later completed his mandatory military service in Greece. At the age of 24, Lykourgos came to Canada and began building a new life. Through determination and an incredible work ethic, he created a life and family here while always remaining deeply connected to Greece and his roots.
Lykourgos was an extremely hard-working man, but he was also happy-go-lucky and found genuine happiness in life’s simplest things. It didn’t take anything extravagant to make him happy. He loved cooking, visiting family, getting out and about, and simply being surrounded by the people he cared about. He was often the person making the effort to bring everyone together and keep family connected.
Family was at the centre of Lykourgos’s life. He married Chariklia Panoussis, and together they had two sons.
Panayoti Panoussis (Heather Bouchard), father of Erica Panoussis (Chris Mellor), Stefanos Panoussis (Danielle Ferrante), Kevin Panoussis, Peter Panoussis, Gracelynn Panoussis, and Anthony Panoussis. Erica and Chris have a daughter, Elena Mellor, Lykourgos’s great-granddaughter.
Evangelos Panoussis (Donna Benoit), father of Luke Panoussis (Cera Beland), David Panoussis (Christina Panoussis), and Abigail Cliche. David and Christina have a son, Elias Panoussis, Lykourgos’s great-grandson.
As his family grew, being a grandfather became one of the greatest joys of Lykourgos’s life. He took tremendous pleasure in caring for his grandchildren, spending time with them, watching them grow, and helping shape their lives.
In the final chapter of his life, Lykourgos had the joy of seeing his family grow yet another generation with Elena and Elias. Their arrival brought him tremendous pride, happiness, and joy.
Lykourgos was the son of the late Panagiotis Panousis and Sofia Panousis. He was the first of the five siblings to pass and will be deeply missed by his brothers and sisters, Tasos Panousis, Michael Panousis, Georgia Panousis, and Koula Vrenta, as well as his many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends throughout Canada, the United States, and Greece.
Above all, Lykourgos leaves behind a legacy of resilience, hard work, family, and an appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. From a young boy making his own way in Athens to a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather surrounded by generations of family in Canada, his was a life built through determination and strength.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.
