In memory of

Lydia V. Salceda

January 29, 2021

In loving memory of Lydia Vasquez Salceda who passed away peacefully on January 29, 2021, three months short of her 96th birthday. She was born on April 4, 1925 in Tiwi, Albay, Philippines to Florentino Vasquez and Veronica Claveria Vasquez.
Lydia was married for 39 years to her high school sweetheart, Dionisio Salceda, before he passed away in 1986. She was also predeceased by two sons, Ruben and Efren in 1977 and 2016, respectively, and a grandson Sacha Salceda in 2017.
Lydia is survived by her 7 children, Nemia, Rico, Arlyn, Jane, Alma, Christie, Larry, 21 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Lydia’s entire life was defined by her deep catholic faith which she instilled in her own children. Her love of travel took her to pilgrimages to the Holy Land, Fatima, Lourdes, Prague and other shrines in Europe and the Philippines.
Lydia was fondly called Mama Lyding by her nephews, nieces, children’s classmates and friends testament to her gentle, compassionate, kind, and caring nature. Very family-oriented and supportive, she did not hesitate to open her home to relatives in need of a temporary place or assist in helping out a brother or a nephew’s school expense. She never passed the opportunity to extend a helping hand. A full time housewife most of her life in her native country, she relished the independence of working in Canada until retirement age. She will be fondly remembered by the various adages she succinctly dropped at any auspicious moment.
“Those we love don’t go away, they will walk beside us everyday.”

Mama Lyding, we will surely miss your presence in our midst. Nonetheless, we will try to comfort ourselves knowing that you are now relieved from the agony, pain and suffering that you have to endure. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Salceda family; “Mama” was an integral support, an extended family, and a powerful positive influence for us, especially all the way back to the beginning of our days in Vancouver when it felt like we were on our own. My own grandmother had said she wouldn’t have been able to navigate the process of coming from the Philippines to Canada, were it not for her. My mom, Bang Alfonso, would not have been able to raise me as well as she did, were it also not for the support of Mama and the Salcedas, especially during our weekend visits in Surrey. We were blessed that we were all able to bring everything together full circle and meet again here in Ontario, even if it was only for a short time. She was deeply loved by all, and will be greatly missed by us.

My prayers, love, hugs & kisses to Mama Lydia’s family.
I remember those days back in Naga City, Philippines when I would come to visit all of you at your house & mama Lydia is busy in your store. I can still see her smiling at me always welcoming me & hear her soft voice when she talks to me. She always made time to for me. She had that personality that if you were having a bad day, all you have to do is see her & when she talks to you, you feel so comforted & safe when you leave their house.
I will surely miss you! The heavens is so lucky to have you as their guardian angel to watch over us.
