Linda Sõmermaa
1926 - 2020
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Linda Sõmermaa. God called onto Linda on Sunday, August 23, 2020 and she passed away peacefully. Predeceased by her beloved husband Lembit Sõmermaa. Loving mother of Mai (Norm), Eric (Jelena) and Martin (Katrin). Cherished grandmother of Katrina (Ben), Rebecca (Andrew), Ashley (Jeff), Rachel (Jason), Kristin, Andrew (Katie), Jaan and Oskar. Adored great grandmother of Mia and Julia. Linda at 17 years of age had fled Estonia from soviet occupation in September 1944 to Germany where she lived with many other displaced Estonians. Here she met Lembit Sõmermaa (ironically also born in the same city named Tartu) and both would emigrate to Canada in October 1948. While Lembit lived and worked at various jobs in Toronto, Linda had been accepted into a 3 year nursing program in Winnipeg. During those 3 years they wrote to each other weekly, growing a long distance love relationship. With Linda moving to Toronto and marriage in December 1954, she worked on call as a nurse for many years and also full time at the Baycrest home for the aged for 23 years. At the end of her life she received the same good care that she gave during her working years as a nurse. She will always be remembered by those she touched along the way for her kind demeanor, compassion and witty sense of humour. Linda will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all her extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers and in loving memory of Linda Sõmermaa, donations may be made to the Baycrest Foundation or the Sick Kids Foundation. May she rest in peace.
