In memory of

Lilian Yan Oy Chan - 陳仁愛

January 21, 1931 -  May 17, 2022

We announce with sadness the passing of Lilian Yan Oy Chan (陳仁愛) in Toronto on May 17, 2022. Survived by husband Philip Tham Yuen Chan (陳添源), son Dr. Benjamin Tien Bun Chan (陳天品), daughter-in-law Julia Schindeler, grandsons Adin Ji-Yin (陳智賢) and Ethan Ji-Gin Chan (陳智堅). Predeceased by daughter, Edna Yuet-Lui Chan (陳悅磊) and elder brothers Hon Tong Chan (陳漢棠) and Rev. Dr. David Tak-Yan Chan (陳德恩).

Born in Hong Kong on January 21, 1931, Lilian’s family endured the untimely loss of their father followed by the Japanese occupation during World War II. Her strong Christian faith was her source of resilience in living through these hardships. After being out of school for four years, she enrolled in an English school without speaking a word of the language and excelled, financing her education through scholarships. She later studied at Northcote teacher’s college and met husband Philip. After marrying and giving birth to Edna, Lilian received a British Council scholarship in Scotland in 1962 to study teaching of English as a Second Language (ESL). After giving birth to Ben, the family immigrated to Canada in 1968. Lilian continued her ESL teaching career at Main Street and Greenwood Public Schools. She touched the lives of hundreds of teenage students over two decades, giving them a firm foundation in Canadian life.

A life-long learner, Lilian took night courses to complete her Bachelor of Arts in psychology and Bachelor of Education at University of Toronto. At age 66, she obtained a Bible Studies Certificate from Moody Bible Institute, which she put to use as a bible study leader in her church, even during her later years when she struggled with heart failure.

Devoted to her family, Lilian endured the tragic loss of Edna from cancer shortly after launching a career in law. Lilian found solace in her faith in God and gratitude for their years together. She later enjoyed her retirement travelling with Philip on cruises around the world and revelling in her role as grandmother to Adin and Ethan.

Lilian is remembered fondly by her family, friends, colleagues and students for her warmth, kindness, generosity and encouragement.

Visitation will take place at Pine Hills Funeral Home and Cemetery, 625 Birchmount Road on Thursday, May 26 from 4 to 8 pm and Friday, May 27 at 2 pm followed by funeral service at 3 pm and interment on the premises. Dinner reception to follow.
