The best family to be around.
Still, I remember how I persuaded them ( Ligi and Guille) to go camping. they didn't have anything and they went for one night. I remember Ligi floating in the water enjoying herself.

Lorena Santacruz (Granddaughter)

Ligia Rosa Álzate was born in Tulua Colombia the third of nine children born to Julia Agudelo and Jaime Álzate.

She was a very obedient daughter who always complied to her parents, a real good girl. She loved her parents dearly.

Her mother Julia would say “mi negra linda” they had a very special relationship.

At the age of 10 she went to the convent to study with the nuns.

At age 14 she suffered a severe burn on her face at the convent due to the explosion of a pot. Her face was completely burned and everyone thought she would be disfigured for life; however by the Grace of God she not only healed but was left without a scar on her precious face.

She was such an angel and compassionate soul from a young age; always wanting to help others, she decided that a way to serve God and others would be to became a nurse.
So at the young age of 16 she became a nurse for infectious cancer patients who were dying.

She made it her mission to make sure that her patients were not only comfortable, but that they weren't aware of how infectious they actually were. It was mandatory to wear masks with these patients but she would say a prayer and go in without a mask to keep her patients at ease.

At 21 she was not just a nurse but a nun in training. She had a month left to become a nun when a new patients of hers was visited by his older brother Guillermo Caicedo.

Guillermo would come visit his dying brother and just like in the movies ended up falling in love with a beautiful young nurse.
His brother Aquilino passed away but not before he ignited a life long love story for his older brother and Ligia.

She left the convent and married Guillermo in January 1955.

They honeymooned in Manizales Colombia,
Shortly after their honeymoon she found out she was pregnant with her first baby. She was so happy and would pray that her first baby was a girl.

Her dream came true on January 25th, 1956 when she naturally delivered her first baby girl born in Cali at Los Angeles Clinic. They named her Mercedes after Guillermo’s mother.

Guillermo and Ligia decided to get a nanny to help out at home; her name was Nanita and she was Ligia’s right hand helping with the the cleaning, cooking and baby.

Shortly after she realized she was pregnant with their second child. A year later on July 22nd 1957 at home with a midwife she naturally delivered a baby boy they named Guillermo Jose Caicedo named after his father.

She enjoyed her two babies for a while before she found out she was pregnant with her third baby.

On September 14th, 1959 at home with a midwife she naturally delivered her third baby a boy which they named Carlos Alberto.

Now a young mother of three she and Nanita had their hands full but so full of love with these 3 babies.

Soon after she found out she was pregnant again, and like the previous three it was an easy enjoyable pregnancy.
On April 24th, 1961 at home with her midwife she gave birth to her fourth baby and to her delight it was another little girl. She named her baby Julia Maria after her beloved mother.

Another year full of babies and love until she again found out she was pregnant and on October 7th, 1963 at home with her midwife she delivered her last and final baby a beautiful baby boy she named Luis Fernando.

Nanita and Ligia definitely had their hands full but full of love. By now Mercedes the oldest was able to help her mama Ligia with her little baby brother Fernando.

When Fernando was two Ligia began working again, she was a nurse, a seamstress and a professional cake maker. Many people weren’t aware of how entrepreneurial and hardworking Ligia was.
Every other weekend she would take a road trip to Roldanillo, which was about two hours away, with two large suitcases full of clothes that she gave out to families in need. Ligia took it upon herself to do this regularly and would sometimes take one of her kids for the road trip. Her heart was so special and she didn’t need to proclaim or announce what she did but the lives that she impacted were many.

In 1970 the economy in Colombia crashed and times were tough especially with five growing children. It was a tough decision but Guillermo and Ligia decided that it would be a good opportunity for him to go to Canada and work and send money back home.

Ligia’s life wasn’t all joy, like everyone she went through her ups and downs and this new transition of raising her five children alone was a lot, but her faith in God along with her relationship with her mother and sisters lifted her up and kept her going.

At the end of 1973 Guillermo went to Canada and told Ligia that he was going to apply to bring the family to Canada. The process took a while but finally after five long years of Guillermo and Ligia’s sacrifice the papers came through and the dream for a better future in Canada had become a reality.

On July 27 1975 she went to the airport with all five of her children so excited for their new life when devastating news that her three youngest children who were still minors wouldn’t be able to travel unless they had a written letter of permission from their father. Ligia had no choice but to leave with her two eldest children and left her three youngest with Nanita and her mother Julia. Two weeks later once they received the permission letter the three youngest children were off to Canada to reunite with their mama Ligia and family.

Having the family together again was really special and Canada was great and exciting but also extremely challenging for Ligia a mother of 5 children as they didn’t speak any English, but what she found most challenging was not being able to see her mother.
Ligia and her mother had a very special bond and it broke Ligia’s heart to not see her daily as she always had and even a daily phone call wasn’t possible because it was too expensive in those days.

The months and years went by and her family in Canada grew, her first grandson was born to her eldest daughter Mercedes.
She cherished being a grandma and being able to help her daughter raise the baby.

In 1980 she was finally able to go back to Colombia to visit her beloved mother Julia and Nanita whom she missed dearly. This is when she began to travel back and forth from Canada to Colombia.

Soon after her eldest son Guillermo had a baby girl and the family started to grow.
She enjoyed the grandma life of a growing family.

Guillermo and Ligia were able to see all five children give birth to their own children. They were blessed to enjoy their grandchildren before the unforgettable tragedy of Guillermos passing in December 1995.

Losing the love of her life was by far the most challenging thing Ligia had ever experienced and sadly she was never the same.
I’m 1999 she suffered a severe depression that took a while to get under control but with faith and God she was able to come back to us and we were able to enjoy her again!
Both of her daughters had the pleasure of having them live with them, a beautiful blessed experience for the grandchildren.

Ligia was a strong funny woman who was loved by so many!

She suffered multiple strokes and kept coming back stronger! She was able to see 3 of her great grandchildren born before she had her last stroke where she ended up in the hospital for a few months before they released her to King Nursing Home in Bolton.

At King Nursing Home it was another chapter for Ligia and her children, she was happy, carefree and finally laughing like she used to. As a Colombian family we most definitely made a statement at the home with our constant visits and laughter. We had many celebrations at the home with our beautiful Mama Ligia.

She absolutely loved it there and was loved by all the nurses with her constant smile... she was so special that even in her later stages of life she continued to touch hearts.

Something I knew about my grandma was that she loved hospitals so every other year she would catch something and end up in the hospital, everyone would be worried but when I got there she’s laugh and it was our own little inside joke of her just needed a vacation outside the home. She would always leave stronger and more resilient than ever.

The last 3 years of Ligia’s life were probably the most special and we all really got to enjoy her, we brought her home to her daughter Julia’s home for Mother’s Day, her birthday and Christmas, she always loved a party especially when we were celebrating her!

2020 came and whacked us all in the face with the most unexpected unforeseen circumstances ever a Global Pandemic! Our family was shook at the thought of not being able to see our beautiful Ligia, as the home was on lockdown. We snuck over on Mother’s Day to see her at the window and luckily we Skyped with her twice a week but it was tough to not physically see her, hug her or hold her precious hands.
At the end of the summer her daughters got the go ahead to see her in person but still no physical touch.

She was strong and resilient making it through the summer and fall.

Unfortunately as 2020 and this virus has been spreading our worse case scenario became a reality and the virus was active in the home. It started to spread slowly but surely and she was strong and resilient until our nightmare came true with a phone call on December 18th telling us that Ligia had in fact tested positive for the virus.

We went a couple of days in distress and devastation without knowing much about her until one morning after a family workout with the girls her daughter Julia popped up and said I am an essential worker, she immersed called the home and asked what she needed to do to see her mom and within minutes they called her back and said she was allowed. God works in mysterious ways and this was a gift because our mama was no longer alone.

Julia was able to spend the last days along side her mother.
By the grace of God on December 25th 2020 Julia was able to call all of the family in Canada, Colombia and United States to say goodbye to our beautiful angel.

As Ligia peacefully took her last breaths she was accompanied by her daughter Julia and 4 other children and grandchildren via Skype she departed this earth on 8:22pm on her favourite day of the year.

She was always one to make a statement and she will definitely be remembered and celebrated forever as our Christmas angel.

This is a very short version my Abuelitas life story from pieces of stories I’ve heard from our family. I love you forever my angel queen ❤️
