In memory of

Li Poi Charles Shim - 沈丽培

September 2, 1946 -  February 3, 2024

After a lengthy battle with cancer, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of Li Poi (Charles) Shim. Born in Guangzhou, Charles moved to Guyana at the young age of 12 before settling in Toronto in 1968. In his early years, he worked tirelessly in various restaurant jobs until he saved enough to marry the love of his life, Elaine in 1970. This year would have marked their 54th wedding anniversary. Once established, Charles played a pivotal role in sponsoring numerous family members to join him in Canada where they shared a humble 2-bedroom house in Etobicoke. He later partnered with his brother Lee in running his many business ventures until his retirement in 2016.

Charles will be remembered for his infectious smile, good-natured humour, and unwavering kindness. Always the first to lend a helping hand, he touched the lives of those around him in meaningful ways.

Survived by his beloved wife Elaine, sons Christopher (Dorothy), Paul (Helen), siblings Yueh Ying (Cheng Pan), Yueh Wei (Henry), Lee Quan (Christine) and the late Yueh Hing (the late Kim Chuen). Charles leaves behind a legacy of love and support. Cherished by his six grandchildren and a host of many other family members, friends and colleagues, he will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Trillium Health Partners Foundation or to my dad's good friend Hazel McCallion's Foundation below. Thanks to the hundreds of staff from the Trillium Hospital Network who helped our father over the years. Words could not express our gratitude. Thank you!

We would like to let your family know, we are praying for God’s comfort for you all.
I miss him very much. He is like my very own brother who was always taking care of me, I being several years younger than him.
We are so grateful for having spent time with him just four weeks ago. He was vibrant and full of hope & life. He gave me a tea set which I will always cherish.
