To my friend Christian,

I was the new kid on the block in Grade 4 and I was very fortunate that you chose me to be your friend when we were 9 years old; 43 years ago. You were always kind to me and easy going and I understood why this was the case when I met your Mom and Dad. The apple certainly doesn't fall far from the tree.

Your Dad, Len, was our Cub Scout leader; our "Akela". I always felt like he paid special attention to me; that's how he made me feel. Like the time he gave me the hint of where to find that shiny 50 cent piece on our scavenger hunt during one of our camping trips with our Cub Scout pack. Or the time he pulled the hankerchief away from our buddy Chris and let me have it so I could run back "home" safely during one of our Cub Scout games because he knew Chris was faster than me.

The ice rink he used to make for us kids back in the day has provided me with a lot of fond memories that I carry to this day. Even though I was the worst skater out of all of us, he and your Mom always made me feel like I belonged. And for a new kid to Canada, a brown kid back in the 70's, that was an incredible thing they did for me. They didn't care what the neighbours would think of them having dark skinned kid in thier home. All they knew was that their son chose me to be his friend and they showed me the same love, kindness and attention that they gave to you. i never once felt like an outsider in their presence.

I will never forget them for that.

Your Dad showed me what a father was supposed to be in every sense of the word. I didn't have that kind of father and I'm forever grateful to Len Watts for showing me the way and literally saving my life from a path that I could have easily gone down. It's not lost on me the kindness and love that I received from your Mom and Dad and all the other parents that helped raise me amongst our group of friends.

My "Akela" will always hold a very special place in my heart. I am the man I am today in large part because of Len.

My enduring love and gratitutde to Len, Rena and to you my friend.

Love,
Skimmer

Len and Rena were the most laid back easy to get along with people. They loved kids and animals. My daughter and I were fortunate enough to go to England and Denmark with them. We stayed with Lens cousin Dolly and have so many memories that make me smile and some laugh out loud. There are just so many memories it’s difficult to pick out one but I will treasure them always.
