In memory of

Larry Ioannou

November 6, 1939 -  February 25, 2018

Larry (Lazaros) Ioannou, age 78, left this life suddenly on February 25, 2018, at home. Born in 1939 in Florina, Greece, son of Stefanos and Polixene Ioannou, he was predeceased (2017) in Canada by brother Louis Ioannou. Larry is survived by his wife of 50 years Susan, son Stefan Ioannou (Kim Auchinachie), daughter Polly Blanco (Luis Blanco), and grandson Lachlan Ioannou. Larry held the position Head of Shops, teaching Food Services at Toronto’s Castle Frank/Rosedale Heights High School, where as a keen sportsman, he also served the fruits of his fishing and hunting in his popular evening adult gourmet cooking classes. During the summer, he trained teachers for Additional Qualifications under the University of Toronto Faculty of Education. A few years after retirement, he returned to the Toronto Board of Education as an Occasional Teacher, working in the classroom up to the time of his passing. He enjoyed his cats and garden and cooking special dinners for his family, to whom he was devoted. He will be remembered and terribly missed as a kind-hearted, loving man, with a mischievous sense of humour, who helped many young people find their way toward a better life. Friends may call at PINE HILLS CEMETERY & FUNERAL CENTRE, 625 Birchmount Rd., Scarborough (north of St. Clair Ave. E., 416-267-8229) on Thursday, March 1st from 2-4pm and 7-9pm with a Funeral Service on Friday, March 2nd at 2pm. Interment and Reception to follow at Pine Hills. Memorial donations can be made to Covenant House. Online condolences can be left at

I am very shocked at his sudden passing, as I was with him at the PD day on Friday.
We sat together in a workshop and shared memories of our time at Castle Frank.
He taught me a lot about cooking in a nightschool course he gave for adults. I still use the recipes he gave us!
I am sad to lose an old friend.

Oh Susan, I was so sorry to read of Larry's passing! It must have been such a shock to you and your family. I have always enjoyed our twice yearly letters, and marvelled at Larry's love of and dedication to teaching, and to you, Stefan and Polly, and especially his grandson Lachlan. Cooking and gardening always came to mind when I thought of him, and although it has been many years since we enjoyed his company in person, I remember him as a gentle man, always with a smile on his face. Richard and I send our sincere condolences and love to you all.
