妻子羅鳳儀携女兒可蕙、芷蕙、敏蕙泣告2017年12月11日
Kwan Wai Lam, 88, passed away on Tuesday, December 5th, 2017 at 8:30am at Sunnybrook Hospital Toronto due to heart failure. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Fung Yee Law, and his daughters, Ho Wai, Winnie, and Mun Wai.
He was born on September 1st, 1929 in Hong Kong to Mr. Shuk Ming Lam and Mme. Wai Ching Cheung. He was one of ten children, growing up in Hong Kong through World War II. After secondary school, he was interested in pursuing structural engineering in college. However, due to financial circumstances, he could not continue with his studies. Instead he became a land survey officer under the sponsorship of British Hong Kong Government.
Land surveying soon became his life work and he was dedicated in passing on his expertise and passion to the next generation of students. He was a devoted teacher at Hong Kong Technical College (now the Hong Kong Polytechnic University), and was both a mentor and friend to many of his students. Among his professional accomplishments, he fondly recalled his first international trip to Britain, which was sponsored by the British Hong Kong Government to further his profession. This experience started his love for world travel, and he and his wife visited countries in every continent except Antarctica. Towards the end of his career, the British Government honored him with the British Empire Medal for Meritorious Service.
After retiring in 1988, Kwan Wai stayed active through swimming and puzzling over the toughest Sudoku. He and his wife also became snowbirds, migrating seasonally between Hong Kong and Toronto until 2015. He became a member of the Christian faith and was baptized in 2003.
A service will be held on Saturday, December 16th, 2017 at York Cemetery and Funeral Centre.
