Mr. Kwan Hop Yung
July 13, 1927 – December 7, 2024
With his youngest child, Sher Peng, by his side, Kwan Hop Yung, passed away at 8:49 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2024, to join his beloved wife, Yu Ying Lin of 73 years.
Kwan Hop was born in Xin Hui, Canton, China, from very humble beginnings. He was orphaned at a young age and was able to overcome barriers and difficulties through true grit and determination during very hard economic times.
He met and married Yu Ying Lin when he was 20 and she was 19. Together they had eight children. Life was tough as he was away often to find work to support his growing family.
In 1973, he came to Canada sponsored by his son Robin (Sher Kang) whom he had not seen for over 13 years. He worked tirelessly in various restaurants in small towns of Ontario and saved in hopes of bringing his wife and children in China to Canada – the land of opportunity.
He and Robin started the process of sponsoring the rest of his family to come to Canada soon after. There was much back and forth and paperwork with Canadian Immigration.
On Mothers’ Day in 1979, Kwan Hop was thrilled to finally greet his wife Yu Ying, his children, Wei, Sim, Yueh Chen, Mei, and Peng at Pearson Airport after 6 years of separation.
From December 1979 – 2009, Kwan Hop and his family operated the Lido Restaurant in Milton, Ontario. He proved himself to be a smart, shrewd, and successful businessman and thoroughly enjoyed his life in Canada with many visits back to China to visit his oldest daughter Yau and her family.
He was overjoyed when his oldest daughter Yau and her family was able to come to Canada - with all his family finally reunited. He enjoyed nothing more than seeing all his family together at dim sum or dinner.
Kwan Hop was a man of deep conviction and faith that anything can be overcome by hard work and determination and that there are always better tomorrows.
He will be deeply missed by his children: Lan Yau (Ken), Sher Kang (Elizabeth), Sim (Tom), Sher Wei (Moo Chung), Yueh Chen (Zheng He), Mei Fang (Wilson) , and Sher Peng (Amanda) grandchildren: Pauline (Paul), Denny (Joy), Amy (Lin), Alex (Siu Man), Brandon, Jordan, Liana (Clinton), William (Grace), Mark, Daniel, Alan, Linda (Alvin), Denise, and Janet.
