Kin Wing Hui, 許建榮, and Gee Man Hui, 黃潔雯, of Toronto, Ontario, both passed away peacefully at the age of 82, on May 22 and May 26, 2026, respectively.
Kin Wing and Gee Man were born in Guangdong province in China on December 9 and September 26, 1943. Both began their careers as mathematics teachers in China where they earned wages that were incomprehensibly low by western standards. They were married in 1970 and a year later gave birth to their eldest son, Jim.
In 1975, seeking a better life and future for their young family, Kin Wing left China to immigrate to Canada. He was sponsored by his big sister, Brenda Lum and stayed with her family in Hanmer, Ontario. There he worked as a cook at her Chinese restaurant. Eventually Kin Wing returned to China to move his wife and son, and in 1979 they made Canada their permanent home. The family stayed in Hanmer for another year before they moved to Toronto. Kin Wing retrained and built a long career as a refrigeration mechanic. With a natural aptitude for fixing things, he expanded his skillset across various trades and eventually started his own HVAC business.
A man of few words, Kin Wing was warm, steady, hard working, and knew the value of a dollar. He lived by the principle of the tortoise and the hare, and won the race to financial security and a stable life for his family through consistent hard work and quiet determination. He took great pride in providing for his loved ones, and creating a secure home in their new country.
Gee Man, the eldest of ten siblings, was a devoted big sister who cooked meals, cut hair, and helped her parents care for the younger children in countless ways. Naturally, she dedicated herself to her own family and chose to prioritize being a stay-at-home mom. In 1981, in their new home city of Toronto, Andrew was born. She occasionally took part-time jobs in Chinatown, but her main focus remained caring for her family and raising their two sons.
Together, Kin Wing and Gee Man realized their dream of giving their children the bright futures and all the opportunities they themselves lacked. Their expression of love to their family, not in words, but in the sacrifices made and hardships overcome. They gave their children the rare gift of complete stability: a financially secure home anchored by parents who chose to stay together through every season of life.
They are survived by their son Jim, daughter-in-law, Vivienne and granddaughter, Cameryn; son Andrew, daughter-in-law, Kalee; and other extended family members in Canada and China.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in their memory to Sunnybrook Foundation (https://foundation.sunnybrook.ca/) or SickKids Foundation (https://www.sickkidsfoundation.com/).
