In memory of

Kay Hayakawa

February 13, 1932 -  April 9, 2023

Kay passed peacefully on Sunday April 9, 2023 at the age of 91 years. She is survived by her children Michael (Karen), Brenda (James), Erin (Kevin), and her grandchildren, Jonathan, Alison, Brandon, and Andrew. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Shizue Saito, Fudge (Robert)Tanaka, and Jeanette Hisaki and her dear friends Tak and Molly Nagano and May and Butch Nishimura. Kay was predeceased by her husband, Mikio, of 64 years, her brother Edward Hisaki and her sister Amy (Terry) Shiga and parents Yoneko and Kanekichi Hisaki.
Kay was born in Vancouver. After WW II, the family moved eastward to Toronto. In her early years, she was a home maker, always willing to volunteer . In addition to her sewing talents, and delicious home cooking, she was known for her signature homemade pies. Later on, she went back to school to further her skills as a lab technician. She worked for another 25 years at the University of Toronto. Kay was an energetic, dedicated and well respected technician. Retirement years found Kay ballroom dancing, travelling, gardening and making preserves. Kay's two favourite past times were shopping and playing slots at the casinos. Most importantly, she relished the time with her 4 grandchildren. Her warm friendly smile, generosity and kind-heartedness will be greatly missed.

Dearest family, remembering with the fondest memories all of the wonderful family get-togethers we had with Keiko and her siblings and parents. So much warmth and happy times for my parents and my brother and myself. May my parents and their loved ones all be resting in peace together.

I have such fond memories of Kay and Mik and our time as neighbours in Downsview. They were always there for me when I was suddenly widowed with four young children. I remember Mik coming over in the dead of night (with a baseball bat!) because I heard a noise in the house. It turned out to be a bird in the air shaft. I am so grateful to Kay for all the sewing she did for my children, Renate (went to school with Michael), Margrit, Henry and Christine. She was so caring at the passing of my parents and nobly agreed to look after Renate and Margrit so that I could go overseas for my mother‘s funeral. Kay was a remarkable woman with a true gift of friendship. We are deeply saddened at her passing. She will be sorely missed. May she rest in peace.
