In memory of

Karl Alleyne Massiah

September 12, 1940 -  June 19, 2023

Died peacefully at Humber River Hospital on June 19, 2023 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease.

Loving husband of 57 years to Pamela (DaCamara); devoted father to Melanie (Eric) and Roberta; proud grandfather (a.k.a. Grumpy) to Naomi, Colin, Sophia, and Ernie. He leaves behind his sister Patricia (Andrew) and brother Robert (Yvette) as well as many dear nieces and nephews.

Born in Barbados he attended the Lodge School and went on to study medicine at University College of the West Indies where he graduated with honours in 1965. His postgraduate studies were done in Toronto in Orthopaedics and he became the first Chief of Orthopaedics at the newly established Etobicoke General Hospital. There he had a successful career and also served as President of the Medical Staff Association. He was instrumental in founding the UWI Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA) and worked tirelessly on its behalf.

He retired in 2005 and enjoyed working in the garden with his roses, bird carving, and travel adventures around the world. His last trip was to his beloved Barbados in 2020, returning just in time to avoid COVID.

Dear Pam,
Doug and I were both sadden to hear of Dr Massiah's passing. He was always one of my favourites at work and Doug always spoke highly of his commitment to the role he played in occupational health for S&C Electric.

Carl has been a friend since our student days at the University of the West Indies in the 1960's. He was always a brilliant student and raconteur and was very successful in his subsequent calling as an Orthopedic Surgeon. He was a credit to his native Barbados. Carl devoted a considerable period of time in the advancing the Medical Alumni affairs of the UWI as our leader. Personal condolence to Pam and all the family. He will be sorely missed and may he rest in eternal peace. Ranjit Singh MD June 2023
