In memory of

Juanita Gonsalves

January 2, 1963 -  April 22, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Juanita Elizabeth Gonsalves, who passed away on April 22, 2025, at the age of 62, following a brief, yet courageous battle with duodenal cancer.

Born on January 2, 1963, to Marlene and Malcolm Gonsalves (both deceased), Juanita was the eldest of two daughters and maintained a close relationship with her younger sister, Marguerita. At the age of 19, she met Jim Samson, to whom she was married for 35 years, during which they raised two children, Emma and James.

Juanita’s warmth and spirit made her an irreplaceable part of Jim’s family, including his parents Phyllis and James (Jim) (both deceased), and his brother David Samson (Karen).

Juanita had a deep affection for animals, which included her dogs Copper, Lily, and Ginger, as well as her horses, Jack (deceased), Secret, and Jace, who reside at the Funny Farm. Her home was a haven of music, warmth, and family gatherings, where she delighted in cooking, “mixing” and dancing to all genres of music.

Her greatest accomplishment were her children, particularly her bond with James, whose empathy and passion mirrored her own. Juanita will be remembered by her family and friends for her kindness, creativity, and infectious energy.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the teams at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre - Surgical, Oncology, and Palliative Care units for their care, compassion, and empathy towards Juanita and the entire family.

A private celebration of life is planned.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Odette Cancer Centre or the Palliative Care Unit, both at Sunnybrook.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Juanita's passing. She was a wonderful, giving woman. I remember her very fondly from when our daughters were growing up and going to all the levels of Girl Guides together. My deepest condolences to Jim, Emma, and Jamie.

Juanita was the older, beautiful and cool sister of my friend Marguerita. Juanita was always kind and talked to me. She let us be silly and take over her space at sleepovers. So many good memories at the Gonsalves’ home. Juanita was a part of that. My deep condolences to your family. She is gone far too soon.

I knew Juanita when we were kids growing up in Thorncliffe Park. All the guys had a crush on her. And why not? Juanita was smart, witty, athletic and pretty. There was a group of us that used to chase eachother around the park after school every day. I remember the care free laughter. Thanks Juanita.

Heartbroken. Rest in peace my dear beautiful golden friend. You were taken far too young. I cannot believe you are gone. Sending love and support to Jim, Emma, Jamie, Marguerita, to the extended Samson and Gonsalves' family.
