In memory of
Joyce Gardner
September 23, 1931 -
April 6, 2023
We are saddened to announce that Joyce Gardner (nee Peacock) peacefully passed away at the age of 91 on April 6, 2023. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; and is survived by her four children and their partners, Douglas (Maria French), Robert (Sandra Hopley), James (Eileen Yoshida), and Donna Jones (Randy). She was also a loving grandmother to seven grandchildren, Raymond, Kyla, Jenna, Carly, Austin, Emily, and Harrison. Joyce was born on September 23, 1931, to Thomas Samuel Peacock and Edna DeVera Pinkney, near Walkerton, Ontario, on a farm established by her grandfather in the 1860s. She completed her high school degree in Owen Sound and a BA from Western University. She married the love of her life, Arthur Douglas Gardner, in 1959. Joyce was a natural in the classroom and taught primary school for many years at Wexford Public School in Scarborough. She was instrumental in helping many immigrant children and their families get oriented to their new country. Joyce was an active member of the United Church and attended Wilmar Heights and St. John's in Scarborough, followed by Dunbar Heights in Vancouver. She had a great love of the outdoors and was the impetus behind many family camping trips. Joyce had a great interest in music and was a strong supporter of her children's musical endeavors. Joyce is remembered by her family and friends for her gentleness, loving laugh, and caring smile. She loved baking and cooking for her family, often sharing cookies, muffins, granola, or tapioca during visits. An amateur genealogist, she enjoyed attending family reunions and visiting relatives across Canada. In their later years, Joyce and Arthur embarked on a number of trips, including journeys through Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Joyce will be laid to rest at York Cemetery in Toronto where a service is planned for the morning of August 26, 2023. We extend our thanks to the staff of Crofton Manor in Vancouver for their excellent care. Instead of flowers, donations to one of Joyce's favorite charities, Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF, would be appreciated.
