Joseph Shewchuk
Born June 14, 1930, Passed Away May 10, 2026.
Joseph was born during the great depression in central Manitoba near the village of Sylvan. His parents, Mike and Annie Shewchuk, were pioneer farmers having immigrated to Canada near the turn of the last century. Mike and Annie cleared a section of land given to them by the government and with the help of their eleven children, they ultimately turned the property into a working, self-sufficient farm, under the harshest of conditions.
Joseph was the youngest of the seven boys and grew up on the farm making an impact in the everyday life of the farm from a very early age. Before the age of 10, Joseph was responsible for feeding the chickens, helping in the vegetable garden, and picking mushrooms. Being situated in a very remote section of Manitoba, there was little in the way of education. Joseph attended a one-room school house until the age of 16 at which point he then worked full time on the farm as there were no high schools in the region.
Like many of his brothers before him, Joe left the farm when he turned 18 to pursue work in Winnipeg. There was little opportunity in the post war period in Winnipeg so Joseph moved to Ontario where there was more opportunity. He briefly settled in Niagara Falls but then moved to Toronto, where one of his sisters had already settled. In Toronto, he successfully found employment ultimately leading to a career as a logistics manager for Kmart from which he retired at the age of 62.
In 1955, Joseph met the love of his life Helene, who had recently emigrated from Austria. They were married in June of 1956 and had one son Jeffrey, born in 1957. Joseph and Helene were married for 67 years before Helene’s passing in 2023.
Together, Joseph and Helene had a great life. They acquired a cottage in Haliburton in 1967 where they enjoyed years of family fun watching their grandchildren Naomi and Lyndsay grow up. Joseph was an avid environmentalist before such a thing was popular. He could name any bird by its call or shape.
In early 2025, already in failing health, Joseph was blessed with a great granddaughter, Sora, who will have the opportunity to build on his legacy as a hardworking, caring, fun and environmentally conscious individual. He will be sadly missed by all.
Joseph is survived by his son Jeffrey, daughter-in-law Janice, granddaughter Naomi and her husband Patrick, granddaughter Lyndsay and great granddaughter, Sora.
