In memory of

Joseph "Joe" Gill

December 5, 1938 -  February 19, 2023

Joe passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto at the age of 84. He will be deeply missed. Joe is lovingly remembered by his wife and constant companion of thirty-six years, Jane Kennedy; his children, Andrew (Jane), Sara (Brian), and Tania (Victor); his step-son, Shane (Sheila); his grand-children, Adam, Ian, Charles, Daniel, Roy, Lily, Ciara, Siaorse, and Declan; and his former wife, Judy. Joe was a proud and devoted father and grandfather.

Joe attended University of Toronto Schools (UTS) and studied at the University of Toronto and Guelph University. Joe enjoyed a long and rewarding career as a chartered accountant with Clarkson Gordon / Ernst & Young, where he was a partner and ultimately Director of National Tax, as well as a stint at the Department of Finance in Ottawa.

After retirement, Joe applied his passion for history and public service as founding chair and longstanding board member of the Friends of Fort York. He was involved in all of the Friends’ activities. Joe will be remembered by his fellow Friends for his tireless enthusiasm organizing historical festivals and raising funds to re-establish the Fort York Guard. In recognition of his extensive volunteerism and service to the city, he was made an honorary member of the Arts & Letters Club, which he treasured.

Joe’s true home and heart was at Bolger Lake, where he spent summers throughout his life. Family and friends were always welcome. He served the Bolger community enthusiastically for many years through his various roles on the board of the Magnetewan Pioneer Association.

Joe was equally comfortable enjoying jazz (or any music) in a smoky bar, attending an elegant gala, or reeling in a big bass. Joe’s tall stature, blue eyes, white hair, and big smile, his enthusiasm for life, his fine mind, and his huge heart will be missed by all who were lucky enough to cross his path.

Joe’s family would like to thank the staff at St. Michael’s Hospital for the quality, compassionate care provided.

Joe’s friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of his life to be held on April 30, 2023, from 2pm to 5pm, at Fort York, Toronto.

I am so sorry to read about Joe’s passing and pass on my sympathies to Joe’s family. We were partners together at Clarkson Gordon / Ernst & Young. Joe’s death notice describes him perfectly. His big heart, compassion, piercing blue eyes and smile will be missed but not forgotten.

Sincere condolences to Jane, Andrew and the entire family. I am so very sorry for your loss. Joe was such a warm, kind person. I will always remember his love of Bolger, and the gatherings at Anne Marie’s, where he always had a kind word to say, and friendly conversation to make. Rest in peace Joe.
