In memory of

Josef F. Sapiano F.I.I.C.

May 24, 1936 -  December 1, 2017

Josef F. Sapiano F.I.I.C.

Joe, the "Maltese Falcon" passed away in his 81st year, at Scarborough Grace Hospital surrounded by the family he cherished. At 20 years old, Joe immigrated to Canada in June 1956. As soon as he stepped off the train from Halifax to Union Station, Toronto and saw all the pretty girls in their crinolined skirts, he knew he was "Home".
Joe will be forever remembered by his devoted and loving family. Carol, his wife of 53 years, daughters Jacqueline ( Jeff) Clark and Monique ( Peter) Seibert and grandchildren Leanne, Julia, Joey and Ryan. He will be missed by his sisters Tina, Sylvia, Rosemarie and Connie ( Benna predeceased ), brother Lino ( John predeceased ), a myriad of nieces and nephews and friends.
Joe was a devout Catholic & lived his faith every day. When he was 3 years old he suddenly lost his father, Joseph. The iron strength of his mother, Grace, along with the positive influence of his 7 older siblings, contributed to the incredible man he became.
Joe was very kind, thoughtful, loving and fun-loving, with an infectious smile and laugh. After he retired from a lengthy career in the insurance industry, he and Carol spent many wonderful winters in Florida. Joe was also a dedicated long time volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross, the Toronto Zoo and CNIB. Over the years he gave generously of his time and himself for scientific studies through St. Michael's Hospital, Sunnybrook Hospital and the University of Toronto. Joe's final gift was donating his body to science for the benefit of mankind. Joe's body is currently resting at the University of Toronto Department of Anatomy where he's waiting for his next volunteer assignment.
Our gratitude to the staff at Shepherd Lodge, especially the 3rd floor , for the care and compassion they showered on Joe, where he sustained some peace and happiness in his final months.
You are invited to Celebrate Joe's life on Sunday December 10, 2017 from 1pm to 4 pm at THE SIMPLE ALTERNTIVE FUNERAL CENTRE 275 Lesmill Rd., Toronto, Ontario 416-441-1580.
if you wish, donations to the Canadian Red Cross, The Toronto Zoo, the Alzheimer Society or the charity of your choice will be gratefully appreciated.

I had a rush of wonderful memories of Joe when Dr. Richard Nurgitz informed me of his passing. Joe was truly a kind and gentle man, I loved our conversations when he came for his dental visits. My condolences to all and I hope to be there on Sunday.
I understand the last few years were difficult but a real hero to the end, and to even leave his body to science. Amazing.

Karen Conway (Volunteer Coordinator)

An infectious smile and a warm, friendly and kind man. I always looked forward to welcoming the Summer Volunteers back each spring, just to hear Joe's laugh and listen to his stories and see his photos from trips to Florida. We've missed him on Monday afternoons these past few summers. May you rest in peace Joe.

Joe's smiling face will be greatly missed at the Zoo. I had the privilege of working beside him at the Zoo for a number of years. He was a lovely, gracious man.
