In memory of

John Lai Chai To

December 27, 1954 -  February 7, 2023

TO, JOHN LAI-CHAI It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved John, who passed away in Toronto on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, in his 68th year. Beloved husband of almost 40 years to Mina (née Leung) and loving father to Jonathan (Crystal) and Jeffrey (Audrey). John also leaves behind his mother, Kwan Yuen Ming, and siblings Peter, Patrick, and Rosa, and is predeceased by his father, To Hon Chung. John was born and raised in Hong Kong, where he attended La Salle Primary School and Wah Yan College (Kowloon). John later moved to Canada and received his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and his CPA thereafter. Afterwards, John moved to Toronto, where he raised his children. He was known by all as a well-mannered gentleman, always respectful to and considerate of those around him. His love of golf was unrivaled, as were his hockey pool selection skills. There will be visitation services on Friday, February 17, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, February 18, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. All services will be held at York Funeral Centre at 160 Beecroft Road, North York, Ontario.

I am really shocked to hear this sad news. I worked with John at the HOOPP for over 6 years. John was an exceptional work colleague. It was so pleasant to work with him. Always in a good mood, positive and very professional. Will be missed by many HOOPP staff.

Rest in peace John. I still remember our last conversation where you shared how grateful you were to work at HOOPP. That conversation feels so recent and I was so sad to hear the news of your passing. I still can’t believe it. I will never forget your smile and your positivity. You will be deeply missed by me and your entire HOOPP family.

I wanted to pass along my sincere condolences to John's family. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this most difficult time. I was so deeply saddened and shocked to learn of John's passing. John was such a kind and gentle soul, and his smile was infectious. Gone too soon but never forgotten. May he rest in peace.

My sincerest condolences to everyone in the To family. We’ve lost a kind and very caring gentleman, devoted to his family and to HOOPP. I will always remember John for his quiet competence and dedication to keeping the HOOPP pension promise and, of course, for his HOOPP annual golf tournament, for which he, deservedly, took great pride. He is sadly missed.
