In memory of

John Herbert McCuaig

February 16, 1944 -  January 13, 2025

John H. McCuaig passed away in the early morning hours of January 13, 2025, succumbing to complications from pneumonia . He is survived by brother-in-law David Mills, his niece Julianne and her husband Paul and his nephew Michael and his wife Sarah. He will be dearly missed by his great-niece Katie and his great-nephew Jonathan.

John was a voracious reader, a lover of film, and the theatrical and visual arts. His love of language led him into a career of editing; his love of learning led him into teaching - and this is where he shone. For many years John taught high school English, but it was really much more than that. He taught young adults to push themselves, find themselves and ultimately to teach themselves.

John spent his last years in a retirement home entertaining the staff with Tarot and palm readings, as well as discovering everyone’s cultural background and regaling them with all sorts of facts about their home country. He loved to discuss history and politics and believed that everyone has a story to tell, if you just take the time to ask them and to listen.

Visitation will be held at the Pine Hills Funeral Centre, 625 Birchmount Rd on Thursday January 23 from 1-2pm with the funeral service and reception to follow.

Best english teacher ever. Wise, caring and he had a great sense of humor. I learned lots from him, mostly to trust in myself and to continue seeking out knowledge no matter how much I think I already know.
May he rest in peace.

I have tried a thousand times to find the words to describe how much I loved this amazing man. I had the pleasure of meeting John when he came to Buckingham. I was very attached to him as a resident right from the beginning. He was very good at knowing me and knowing when I was off. As I knew when he was off. He had that intuition and he was always right. He got me and praised me for being his saviour. We had a bond that made my heart smile and he made me realize how important I was and to never forget that. He was a true person who never sugar coated anything. His passing was the worse heartbreak I’ve felt since I became a PSW. He stole my heart. John you were my safe person and my friend. I know that you are with your wife and smiling down on us all. You’re free my love. I’m the person and psw today because of you and your unconditional love and support. My tears will never stop because I miss you so much. John may you rest in peace!!! I will always have a special place in my heart just for you. Until we meet again.

John was a wise and wonderful man.
John, his wife Vicki and I were teachers together at Glenforest Secondary. He and Vicki were unfailingly generous, kind and understanding; they helped me grow as a teacher.
I will always remember with fondness his quirky sense of humour and incredible depth of knowledge and insight.
Godspeed, gentle soul
