Dr. John Fong passed away peacefully at North York General Hospital on July 8, 2025, at the age of 83. He faced both lung cancer and urothelial cancer, thriving despite these challenges over the past seven years with remarkable strength and purpose.
Born on December 20, 1941, in Hong Kong, he was the son of Man Chong Fong and Chi Wai Leung, and one of eight siblings. He attended Wah Yan College before moving to Canada, where he earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax and went on to complete a medical degree at the University of Toronto in 1968.
On June 19, 1969, John married the love of his life, Sophie Ko-Fong, and together they shared 56 years of deep companionship and unwavering support. As a devoted husband; a loving father and father-in-law to Edwin Fong and Tammie Poon-Fong; and a doting, proud grandfather to Quinlan and Quinton, John’s greatest joy was always found in the company of those he loved.
Dr. Fong dedicated his career as a trusted family physician, serving patients at Beech Medical Clinic for decades until his retirement, when he spent more time with family and friends between Toronto and Vancouver.
John will be lovingly remembered not only for his professional dedication and personal integrity but also for his quiet wisdom, warm smile, wry sense of humour, and meaningful conversations.
A private burial for immediate family only will be held on July 26, 2025.
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you remember John by sharing a favourite memory via the guestbook below or by performing a random act of kindness in his honour.
