Simon and Jason very sorry for your loss.
Dear John ,
May you flyhigh, dance amongst the stars. You where defintely one of a kind & I always enjoyed working with you.Always intersting never boring..Rest in Peace
I first worked with John in 1978 when I came to Canada. I shot several films with him over the years and considered myself lucky to call John a friend. Sometimes years would pass and we would meet or call to say hello. He will be missed.

I first met the wild and crazy character that was John Board back in 1972 when to my knowledge there were only about three 1st ADs in English Canada - John, Tony Lucibello and Tony Thatcher. I was 2nd AD for him on a Don Shebib film called Between Friends.
In the 90s we were on the board of the DGC together, and he came out to work as 1st on a series I directed in Sydney, NS called "Pit Pony". In this century he came out to first a comic short film I made called "Right Hook: A Tall Tail". Great times. All those shows, and yet he never did get me to sample those potions he was always going on about. He was very skilled, one of a kind, and will be missed.
John was the first AD I worked with an actor and I had the distinct pleasure of continuing that relationship over decades as I moved on to write and produce and he continued to manage casts and crews in the most gentle yet productive way. He loved making movies and television, always doing whatever it took to make the process as humane as possible. On that first day, I had to do a nude scene with a female performer. John sensed we were both nervous and cajoled the crew into helping out. When we walked on set, everybody else was buck naked too. Okay, it was 1971. But no nude scene was ever filmed in such conviviality. God Bless you, John. You're one of the pillars on which Canadian film making was built.
