In memory of

John Abuja

January 27, 1935 -  May 6, 2022

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of John Abuja May 6, 2022 at Renoir Retirement home in Newmarket where he received care for the last month of his life. Prior to this, he lived for the last 7 years with his wife Simone in Newmarket and before that they lived in Toronto in the east Annex for over 50 years.

John leaves behind his devoted wife of over 63 years, Simone, and beloved children, Bob (Sandra) in Orangeville, Glenn (Shirley) in Newmarket and Linda in North York. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Catherine, Sarah (Jason), Allan, and Stephen (Anna).

Born in a small village in the south of Austria, John emigrated to Toronto when he was 19 leaving behind his parents, Johann and Maria, and 2 younger brothers, Walter (& Hermi) and Ludwig (Elfrieda). He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He worked on the railroad for 6 years followed by 35 years as a TTC bus driver on the Rosedale and Forest Hill routes in particular. He was sharp as a tack, always a gentleman and greeted everyone with a smile.

John loved to spend time with family and friends at the family cottage he built. John took up carving during his retirement creating many works of art. John overcame quintuple bypass surgery as well as kidney cancer. He started developing Alzheimer’s about 8 years ago and eventually succumbed to it.

In memory of John, and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated. A special thanks to the compassionate caring people at Renoir Retirement home.
