In memory of

Joe Repka

It is with broken hearts that the family of Joe Repka announce his passing. Born in Toronto before it became a sophisticated urban centre, he embraced the ethos of a gentler time when neighbours looked after neighbours, which is exactly how he conducted his academic career at the University of Toronto. His kindness and support were bestowed upon all who crossed his path. Joe was a Professor of Mathematics who worked in the area of Lie Algebras. A polymath, his research reached across the disciplines to include physics, evolutionary biology, and medicine. His network of collaborators extended across the globe, and they will continue his legacy. Joe was also a lover of the arts. He played the piano and guitar and was passionately involved in his wife’s pursuit of classical painting. He was familiar with the entire oeuvre of Shakespeare and frequently quoted from the Bard, as well as from his favourite Canadian poet, Robert Service. His passion was telling stories, both historical and personal, which delighted his students and colleagues. Joe is survived by his adoring wife Debby, his beloved daughter Chloe, and his brother Paul and family. The funeral will be held on Sunday, December 7 at 1pm at Mt Pleasant Cemetery Funeral Centre, 375 Mt Pleasant Rd.

Joe was a remarkable father always there to help me when I needed it for school and practical skills. Joe was very loving and kind always lending a hand to anyone who needed it. He was very patient. He also loved doing mini projects in the house and taught me many things. He even taught me driving a boat and fishing as well as basics of the car. One very useful skill Joe taught me was how to jump a vehicle as well had to jump our old lawn mower many times in the past. Joe loved animals as well. These skills and many others as well as our adventures will always stay with me. I miss you very much dad and I hope you rest easy til I see you again. You will forever be loved and missed ❤️

I first met Prof. Joe Repka in 2016, when I spent one semester as a graduate visiting student at the Department of Mathematics, University of Toronto. During that time, Prof. Joe became my supervisor. He was incredibly gentle in guiding me as his student, and he cared deeply about my academic growth and future.

In 2023, I had the opportunity to visit Toronto again to collaborate with him. For me, Prof. Joe was not just a supervisor — he was an academic father figure who truly loved and supported his students. His kindness, patience, and generosity left a profound impact on my life.

I feel a great personal loss with his passing. Although he is no longer with us, he will always remain in my heart and in the hearts of his students. His classes, his guidance, and his spirit will always be remembered and deeply missed.

May he rest in peace.

They say you can never pick your neighbours but if I had a choice I would have picked the Repkas. Georgina Island, University of Toronto, and the people who knew Joe are all the poorer with his absence.

Debbie, Chloe and Repka family, We're so sad to hear of your terrible loss. Although we don't really know Joe , we have admired him from afar through the wonderful complements that our daughter Lindsey has shared with us over time. He was her PHD. Advisor. His dedication, sincere interest in his students and his devotion to his family have been very admirable. We are most grateful for the foundation ( advice and professionalism ) that Joe offered Lindsey throughout the past twenty years . We're so happy that we had the opportunity to meet Joe and Debbie at Lindsey and Jon's wedding and could share a happy occasion together. We hope that your special family memories will help carry you through this most difficult time. Joe will never be forgotten. MayJoe rest in peace.
