In memory of

Joan Attwood

December 9, 1938 -  January 4, 2024

With broken hearts we announce the passing of Joan Delores Attwood on January 4th, 2024, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She was the daughter of the late Chester MacKenzie and Rita Wilks of Glace Bay, NS.

Joan loved spending her time with friends and family both in person and of course… talking on the phone. Joan enjoyed playing bingo, going to the Casino, listening to country music and spreading her kindness to all. She looked forward to her yearly trips back home to Cape Breton, NS to spend time with family and friends.

Joan spent her career at Dye & Durham, where many co-workers turned into lifelong friends.

Joan is reunited with the love of her life, her devoted husband Tommy, her son Glenn Bates, daughter in-law Arleen Phillips, brothers Ronnie MacKenzie and Chester MacKenzie, sister Lois Legere, sister in–laws Lonnie MacKenzie, Alice MacKenzie, Ann Nicholson, Phyllis “Sister” MacLeod and brother in-laws Roy Legere and Allan Attwood.

Joan is survived by son Brian Bates, daughter Sherri (Bruce Chiasson), grandchildren Crystal (James), Melissa (Katherine), Cody (Beth), Leanne (Matt), Peter, Collin, Connor, Kyle and cherished great-grandchildren Tanisha, Daniel.

Joan is also survived by her sisters Joyce (Clifford) Morrison, Winnie, brother Terry (Sharon) MacKenzie, sister in-laws Billy MacKenzie, Audrey (Jim) Blacklock, Grace Attwood and brother in–law Lorne Nicholson, as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.

Joan will be dearly missed by all who knew her and will forever live on in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson’s Society, would be appreciated by the Family.

There will be a reception immediately following the service at Baron Byng Royal Canadian Legion at 243 Coxwell Avenue, Toronto, Ontario.

So deeply sorry that Joan is no longer with us here on earth, but we all know that heaven has gained one of the best! She had a following of so many people…family, friends, co-workers and neighbours who loved her dearly. If you encountered Joan in your lifetime, you couldn’t help but love her for her warm and interesting personality, her thoughtfulness and the interest she showed in everyone. I will miss seeing her here in Cape Breton and especially the updates from her sister, Joyce, on how she was doing. Rest in peace, Joan. You will be in my heart forever.
