In memory of

Jean Ballinger

July 1, 1928 -  May 16, 2023

BALLINGER, Jean A (July 1, 1928 – May 16, 2023). Peacefully at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto. Predeceased by her husband Frank S Ballinger and her parents Edna and Russell Whitehead. Sister of Donna Ballinger (the late John) and Russ Turk Whitehead (Judy). Mother of Jim (Deborah) and Keith (Lisa) and grandmother of Karen Ballinger and Sarah Ojo (Toye). Aunt of Lynn Morrison and Steve Whitehead, predeceased by nephews John G Ballinger and Todd Whitehead.

Born in Niagara Falls, Jean grew up in the Hydro community of Cameron Falls, north of Port Arthur. When the family was transferred to Fitzroy Harbour, Jean completed her education in Etobicoke and began working at Ontario Hydro. There she met an engineer, Frank Ballinger, and they were married in 1950. They bought a house on Roehampton Avenue, moving to Divadale Drive in north Leaside in 1961. South Leaside called them in 1997. Jean has been an active member of Manor Road United Church since 1950 and was involved in the wider church. She also volunteered with numerous charitable organizations. She was thrilled when her granddaughters were born and followed their accomplishments with great pride. She had many life-long friends who she treasured.

Jean loved knitting, sewing, flowers, books, and travel, but was happiest with a nice cup of tea, a home-baked biscuit, and someone with whom to chat, even if only by phone.

The family wish to thank the staff of Ewart Angus SPRINT Home and Dr Jocelyn Charles for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, donations are invited to Manor Road United Church or the Abiona Centre for Infant and Early Mental Health.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on September 18, 2023, in the Funeral Centre at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

I especially have great memories of Jean as a tireless worker for the church in many roles, but especially as I helped at many annual fall fares in preparing and serving meals along with my friend Ed Oikawa and others. Those were some very special times.

Jean was such a pillar at Manor Road. She ran the knitting group , was our contact for the Massey Centre, and many other duties. She was generous and supportive.

Sending my deepest condolences. "Aunt" Jean was an important part of my youth looking after myself and my brother Ken at lunch times, after school and when sick. Good memories of Divadale Drive. So sorry I could not be at the memorial. Would love a recording if one made. Sending love to Keith, Jim and your families. Joanne Peace
