In memory of

Janet Mary O'Neill

May 10, 1938 -  September 29, 2022

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Janet O’Neill at age 84. Predeceased by her husband Douglas “Mike “ O’Neill & her grandson David Mathew Gilbert. Cherished mother to Sally & Sarah, mother-in-law to Steve & Shaun & grandmother to Andrew Michael, Laura & Mitchell.

Janet was born & grew up in Bristol, England. At age 29, she along with her husband & two daughters, emigrated to Canada. She had many different careers during her working years. Testing chemicals, secretarial & administrative positions and to finally be the office manager of 90 people in the procurement depart at an engineering firm. Her most happiest times however, we’re spent looking after her grandchildren. Whether it was sleepovers or “ventures with Backy”, holiday celebrations on Laurier Crescent, trips to Florida, Hilton Head, or California or just taking them to an activity. Nanny was always there for her grandchildren.

Sadly dementia took her away from us but her memory lives on for all of us who called her “Nanny”.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made the the Alzheimer’s Society, to help find a cure for this cruel disease.

What a beautiful tribute to Janet. A happy photo and a touching description of her journey. How loved she was and how much she loved all of you. I didn’t know those details of her work life. Sending hugs to all.

We are forever grateful for the love and memories Janet and Mike and their families shared with our family during our time in Pickering. Living next door to their daughter Sarah, and her husband Shaun with Michael and Mitchell as our children's best friends, was a gift accentuated by regular inclusion in family gatherings . And as if that wasn’t good enough, we soon met the Gilbert family, Sally, Steve, David , Andrew and Laura, who like the others seem to have an endless supply of love to go around.
Distanced from our own families of origin, the good fortune of living next door and being welcomed into O’Neill, Adams and Gilbert warm circle of love was not lost on us . Janet readily and generously shared her motherly wisdom and grandmotherly love and affection. Our children referred to Janet and Mike as their Nanny and Backy, and affections were regular, spontaneous and from the heart. Janet’s sense of class, her life experience and sage wisdom set a tone and example which helped to shape and inform us as parents and influence our children in the most positive ways. Thank you for sharing your mother and Nanny with us. Thank you Janet and Mike, (Nanny and Backy) for your love and guidance. Your work is done and may you both now Rest In Peace.
Love you forever , The Carr family
