Dear Alex & Mary, Bennet & Kathleen, and Family,
I can feel your pain as well as anyone other than yourselves of the passing of your loving dad. For decades, James and I worked closely and tirelessly together in Hong Kong Island Island Region and I still vividly recall how hard we worked and how much we enjoyed in conducting and assisting the Scout Leader Training Courses and activities. His passing is painful, but the least comfort we had and perhaps a blessing for James was he is away from the toil and miseries and now enjoys peace, calmness and a better life in a much better place in the care of God. He will be fondly remembered by the family and all those who know him.
My sincere condolences to you all and your loved ones and hope all are coping well with your sorrow loss. Please take good care of yourselves and keep well.
Joseph Shek.

I didn’t know Mr. Chan Yick Chung (James) at first. It was only after Mr. Huang Shaoguang from Toronto introduced him to join the association last year that I learned that James was an honorary Scout in 1955. He was awarded the award in the same year as fellow association member Mr. He Jiawei and former association member Mr. Ouyang Renxian. chapter. We later exchanged emails due to conference matters, but never had the chance to meet in person. This time coincides with James's return to Hong Kong, so I was able to get together with him and hear about his previous experience as a Scout.

We met for lunch at the Jockey Club Grand Slam Hall. My first impression of James was that he was energetic, full of energy, and looked younger than his actual age. In terms of seniority, I will respectfully call him Sir Chan, because he is of the same generation as Mr. Hong Zhaoan, Mr. Huang Shaoguang and others. Of course, I am the junior. But he said it was okay for me to call him by his first name, which shows that he is a cheerful and open-minded person. During the conversation, I felt that he was cheerful and talkative.

Certificate issued. Let’s start with his Scouting career. He started participating in the Scouting movement in 1952 and first joined the 5th Scouting Brigade as a senior Scout. According to records, he received the Honorary Scouting Medal in 1955, but it turned out that he was awarded the Honorary Scouting Medal in 1954. In October 2018, Lord Warren, the leader of the Commonwealth Scouts, had secretly received the certificate when he visited Hong Kong. The Fifth Scout Brigade was already known as Roving Fifth before the war and was well-known in the Scout circle. From 1955 to 1961, several Scouts were awarded the Honorary Scout Medal every year. Unfortunately, it ended for unknown reasons. . Fellow member Mr. Chiu Cheng-kee also came from the brigade and was an honorary Scout in 1961. He moved to the Northern District of Hong Kong Island in the mid-1960s to serve.

The Scout Association of the Philippines held the 10th World Scout Jamboree in 1959. This was the first World Scout Jamboree held in Asia. The Hong Kong Scout Association also sent Mr. Tse Ping-kui as the leader of the delegation to lead the delegation to participate. James served as his deputy as the Scoutmaster. Also present were Mr. Shi Yiu-chung and Mr. Zhou Zhanqiao, who were senior Scouts at the time.

The Hong Kong Police Welfare Department established the Kowloon 90th Scout Brigade for police children in 1963. Although James was not serving in the police force, he was recommended by a British friend who served in the military to serve as the brigade commander. Due to the strong support from the Police Welfare Department, such as free uniform supply and various support, the tourism business developed very well from the beginning. Three years later, in 1966, for the first time, a total of four senior Scouts were awarded the Honorary Scout Medal. Mr. Miao Huisheng, the father of Rose Miu, an honorary senior Scout of the 11th Brigade in Toronto, was one of them. The brigade has been operating well to this day, and in recent years many senior Scouts have been awarded the Honorary Scout Medal.

James was the Scout District Director and Assistant District Director (senior Scout) in Tsim Sha Tsui District. During his tenure, he was appointed as the leader of the Hong Kong delegation to lead the Scouts to Japan to participate in the Asian Scout Jamboree. He joined the training corps as a trainer in 1965. Later, he felt that the working thinking and attitude of others in the Hong Kong Island region were similar, and in 1969 he accepted the invitation to serve as a member of the Hong Kong Island regional training team.

From 1959 to 1973, James worked in the Pharmacy Department of the then Medical and Health Department. After moving to Toronto, Canada with his children in 1973, James continued to work as a pharmacy assistant there until 1980, and then transferred to the Canada Post Service until his retirement in 1991. James immigrated to Toronto earlier than Mr. Hong Zhaoan and Mr. Ko Hansen. He may be the first group of Hong Kong Scouts to develop in the local area. After retirement, he began to live a leisurely life, enjoying his time with his grandchildren. His favorite sports include Tai Chi and swimming, and his hobbies include collecting stamps.

The 150th anniversary of the founding of the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps. The main purpose of James' return to Hong Kong this time is to participate in activities such as the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps and the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth School .

Oxfam Trailwalker Charity Relay. After James arrived in Hong Kong on November 3, he was busy participating in many commemorative activities of the Hong Kong Volunteer Army, such as several grand events: participating in the Oxfam Trail Walker Charity Relay held from 5 to 7, completing the Sichuan Longjing Big Hat It takes more than 4 hours to travel from Shanshan to Tai Lam Chung. On the 10th, I attended the unveiling ceremony of the commemorative plaque for the Hong Kong Volunteer Army headquarters erected at the Jockey Club Headquarters Building on Sports Road. On the 11th, I attended the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Volunteer Army retrospective exhibition held at the Coastal Defense Museum and on the 13th. Attended the anniversary dinner held at Longbao International.

Celebrations of the British Chapter of the Hong Kong Volunteer Army, James previously went to London, England in early June to participate in the celebration of the British Chapter of the Hong Kong Volunteer Army. The picture on the right is that he presented souvenirs to the representatives of the British Chapter on behalf of the Ontario Chapter of Canada at the event. While he was in London, he also Make a special trip to Kevil Camp to visit.

The Hong Kong Volunteer Army was established in 1854 and was known as the Royal Hong Kong Defense Force and the Royal Hong Kong Regiment in different eras. As Hong Kong returned to the motherland in 1997, the Hong Kong Volunteer Army was disbanded on September 3, 1995 and will be under the jurisdiction of the former Junior Leader. The Corps was renamed the Hong Kong Adventure Corps and continued to provide services to young people.

James joined the Hong Kong Volunteer Army in 1966. He said that because he had been trained as a Scout for a long time, his training results when he joined the army were better than others in all aspects, so he got the opportunity to be promoted in a short period of time. Before retiring and moving to Toronto, he was appointed as a captain, and he was one of the few Chinese at that time. Senior officer.

Queen Elizabeth Secondary School Golden Jubilee Celebration. While in Hong Kong, James attended the Golden Jubilee celebrations of his alma mater, Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, on November 22. The school was founded in 1954 as the first government English secondary school for boys and girls in Hong Kong. The school was named after the idea of establishing the school began in 1953, the year Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne. James is the first graduate in 1956, and he is a legitimate senior brother.

James also has a long-term love side. Every time he returns to Hong Kong, he will pay homage to the grave of Mr. Markey, the former Hong Kong Director. It turned out that he regarded Mr. Ma as his mentor. When he was studying for the special badges required for the Honorary Scout Medal, such as pioneering projects and camp management, Mr. Ma invited several of them to return home and teach them personally, thus establishing a relationship that lasted for many years. The feeling of being both a teacher and a friend.

Although I met James for the first time, I could still learn some details about his past life in a short conversation, and I also had a better understanding of his previous Scouting activities. But what impressed me the most was his drive and vitality. He is truly getting stronger with age!

Michael Chan (Brother)

In the early days, the Chan family was very poor. Going back in time when Henry (#7 of the Chan siblings) was still a toddler, my brother had to carry him around on his back using a baby sling carrier. James was also responsible for feeding Henry and he would give Henry two spoonful but rewarded himself with one!

Meanwhile, James stayed very close to me as I am just 2 years younger. We both served in Civil Aid Services as dispatchers delivering messages in emergency situations. Later on, James was more involved in Scouting and became the Group Commissioner. But his full commitment was with the Royal Hong Kong Volunteer Regiment which he held the rank of Captain. James was popular and well known in helping others.

Even in his final days, James recalled his good old days meticulously but failed with his short term memory. The journey in 1956 with my brother James via a ferry 佛山 to Macao was one of the most memorable. Disembarking at the pier, we were completely clueless but by luck, we found an affordable hotel by the sea. We had a great time travelling on bikes to visit the scenic spots.
